Stik -- Yeah I noticed the same thing Saturday when I was looking. Benton Shooters had all kinds of it...22 LR, 17 HMR, and 22 Mag...but they were $50 a box for 22 LR (all brands) and the 17 and 22 Mags were $20+ for a box of 50. Dunhams and Academy had the same stuff for $11 a box and $20 something for the 22 LR.

I had the same dilemma last year and went with the 17 just for it's nifty ballistics (as long as there is no wind). The biggest thing I'll ever be shooting with it is a squirrel anyway. I got it mainly for targets/fun. I love it. Awesome little gun.
I don't really think you could go wrong with either round though. They're both excellent.

Got me a Marlin 17 with laminate stock...on sale $25 off and 15% off ammo. Out the door price with background check and box of ammo was $279. I couldn't have drove to middle TN and back to get UTGrads gun for that price...I would've drove out $100 in gas. It's a little heavier barrel than what I wanted but it's not a huge target barrel. Still weighs 6 lbs. Can't wait to shoot it.
UPDATE -- Bought a Sweet 17 scope off eBay for $50...a 2-7x33. In the time being, I had a cheap 3-9x40 I put on it just so I could shoot it. Set it a half inch high at 50 yds.
Could not believe the power this gun has for such a small bullet. I set a can filled with water at 50 yds...a small 8 oz water bottle at 75, and a 16 oz water bottle at 100. It exploded the can like it was hit with a high powered rifle. The bottle at 75 was the same way. The bigger bottle at 100 I shot over top of it the first shot...aimed at the bottom of it and hit it up toward the neck...and blew the whole top off it. Love it so far.

CATCHDAWG -- Yeah I have a few friends that work down there. They said Brad had them stay over several hours one night last week re-pricing everything shooting related and marking prices up. I know I was in there Friday the 21st, and .22 LR was priced at $35 a box...which was already marked up from what it was. When I was in there this past Saturday it was marked up again to $50 a box. My jaw about dropped to the floor when I saw it...and you still wouldn't believe the amount of people grabbing it like they are fresh made fried apple pies.
