The manufacturers and wholesalers have records of what guns went to what ffl, so when something like that happens they trace the gun from ffl to ffl to find out where it came from and where it went. The problem is when the gun is sold as a private sale thats where the paperwork generally ends.

He's right. The last person to buy the gun from a FFL holder is the person they go after to question.
