Love that rifle - Marlin 336? - has to be. It is my favorite deer gun. I used a 1894? in .357 for years, and while the 30-30 doesn't take them off of their feet the way the .357 did, the additional range is nice.

yup that is the gun. I love it too. I have dropped 2 in their tracks with it, which came as a surprise to me but even when they don't drop in their tracks, they don't go far. Shot this one broadside at 24 yards, bullet went in the left shoulder, blew the heart to pieces, nicked the lungs, tore a hole through the liver. I guess the shoulder blade deflected the bullet. Just plain old Winchester power points

I'm not a big gun guru, so I will hope someone with more knowledge will chime in. But, I have read that there are issues with using pointed bullets in a lever action rifle due to the "point" touching the primer of the round ahead of it in the magazine. Supposedly recoil can cause the round to fire in the magazine.

I don't know how much spire your Winchester power points have, but it may be worth checking to see if it could be an issue.

Congratulations on another deer. You are on a roll this season!

30-30 is not a "pointed" bullet, so no issue.

Most standard 30-30 rounds are soft point or round nosed and specifically made for lever actions and to keep from having misfires.. I've owned and hunted with one since I was a kid. I've never had any issues with misfires or even leaving a mark on a primer of another shell during recoil. Only problems I have ever heard of and read about are people who have reloaded and loaded fmj projectiles and such... I personally love a 30-30 cartridge and generally use a core-loc 170 grain hollow point for deer..
Congrats catman!!!!

There are pointed 30-30 bullets out there designed to be shot in non-lever action rifles. My FIL had a bolt action in 30-30. Just wanting to make sure a power point is not a "pointed" bullet.

Right, and the new leverrevolution bullets are pointed with a soft ballistic tip to absord the recoil, while having more of a point and better bullet selection for accuracy. Good question SCN, as it could be very dangerous to those not knowing any better than to use the older pointed bullets in a lever gun!

Thanks for the concern scn. The power points are just soft tip bullets. Flat on the tip, no worries about the primer.
