Does anyone here have any experience? I am looking to burn about 20 acres this spring on my farm. I am beginning to plan it now. I was thinking about seeing if anyone else wants to gain some experience, we could make it a field day and have a cookout afterward.
The plan is to top kill some 3 to 4 yr old cutover to get fresh vegetation at ground level this summer and to allow the native seed bed more sunlight.

I will help out and I would like to do the same. I might only need a few small areas equalling a 3-5 acres max. Keep me updated.

Check with TWRA and the forrest service. They may be able to help you plan and maybe do the burn.

That is why I could use all the help I can get. Luckily I have a bunch of logging roads to serve as fire breaks incase it gets out of control. Also, I plan on getting a dozer in to make wider breaks in other areas ahead of time. My plan is to burn this section every 2-4 years.
I will be notifying the forestry dept ahead of time and their local fire unit. They are familiar with my place since we had a wildfire a few years ago.

I'm looking to do one in Watertown. I was going to check with the vol fire dept and see if I could pay those boys to come out and give me a hand. Or make a donation to the dept. I actually called them this morning and didn't get an answer.

That seems like a good idea, although you might have to sign a waiver for them saying that they aren't liable if the fire got out of control or something.
Burns were always something that I wondered about, since they seem very effective, but also worrisome. I think I might have to plan mine the day before rain was forecast, just for a backup plan

Bayou, you should call Clint Borum with TWRA. He is in the murfresboro office. Burning is part of his job, and he spoke about it at one of the QDMA meetings. Seems like he said he would be happy to.come out and do a burn on anyone's property

I did my own and the fire department came and put it out. Made a mess too driving their machinery over my fields. I had to finish it late that night. They are great when you need them, but can be pesky too.

That is interesting. I have some areas that I would like to burn, but I am scared to death I'll burn down the entire forest!

I'm waiting for this weather to dry up to get the dozer in there. I will be putting in some good firebreaks and plan on burning on a south wind. I plan to back burn the northern side and then set a head fire from the south to the blacked out area.
If this wet weather pattern keeps up through the spring I may just have to get it sprayed with herbicide via helicopter and burn it later.

Youll likely get your window for only 20 acres, especially if your just burning fine/flashy fuels. Drying time on flashy fuels like leaves and grass is very short, sometimes only a day or 2 if it can get some sun and wind on it. I personally like to burn as close to the next rain as possible, reduces mop-up and wraps things up nicely for you.
