Anyone got or plan on getting any new "toys" for the upcoming season?

I got a couple of custom pot calls in the works.... Lights Out green anodized aluminum & ceramic surfaces.

Got this set made after last season, Amboyna Burl crow call and a hawk screamer out of a Spalted Burl wood:

I'd like to hear that crow. fine looking calls there. Do you use em as locator calls?I've never really bothered with locators mainly because of public land and there are a lot of crows already.

"Lot of crows already" is why I also got the hawk screamer.... I'm happy with them and can hardly wait to try them out this spring.

Swamphunter and I tried to get on a bird the better part of a day last year.... he wouldn't shock gobble at a crow call or a real crow cawing but he would "hit" regularly at the hawks that were in our area and being vocal.... just wasn't gobbling frequently enough to get a good location on him.... he seemed to be constantly moving back and forth in different directions but we couldn't close the gap to work him.... he wanted the "hen" to come to him.... no ifs, ands, or butts about it.

If I go into a place blind and he isn't gobbling on his own, I will use a locator to try to make him give away his location or to see if there is a tom in the area. I am a little impatient when it comes to going in blind about calling/waiting to see if something shows up unannounced.

If I get time to roost a bird, I will use it to get a good bearing on him for the next morning and then just get in close to him before daylight and see what happens.

If I know the area has birds frequently using it, I don't mind setting up and waiting.... calling every so often, that's if hunting time isn't an issue.

I don't know a lot about decoys. I just saw some at Walmart last March that looked good. Don't remember the name of the company that made them. My memory was affected by my heart attack. \:\(

I would really appreciate that. I also never got around to getting a turkey choke this past spring for my 20 gauge. I do remember reading the posts on old gobbler about the chokes but forgot which one I was going to buy. I will go on old gobbler tomorrow and research it again. A mind is a terrible thing to lose. \:D I also have a turkey call that I purchased last spring that Showmehorns said worked very well in this area. My wife put it away while I was in the hospital and now I just have to search the house and find it.

I now have plenty of time to hunt and plan to kill my first turkey. \:\)

I tell you what, if you have a place I will come up there to go with you, if you don't, you guys come down here and stay with us, we can hunt AEDC.

I'm curious to know what choke tube you were looking at.... What shotgun do you hunt with and what shells were you going to be trying out?

Do you have a turkey vest yet?

Cannot remember the name of the choke tube that was recommended by a lot of people that used the same shotgun that I use. It is a Remington 870 in 20 gauge. Also cannot remember the name of the shells. I think they had 7 1/2 size shot. Like I said, my memory was really affected. I sometimes bump into people I used to work with in the store and they have to tell me who they are.

I don' have a turkey vest, but have a camo vest I use to dove hunt with. I also have a seat that is designed to turkey hunt with.

I have an extra vest as well (guest vest), yours if it will fit and you want it.

I looked over several threads on the 20ga.... most were trying the Indian Creek, Pure Gold, or Jelly Head chokes.... seen a few with the SSX.... using the Federal shells, either the ones with the flight control wad or the new Heavy Weight shells.... some using the Hevi-13.... most seemed to be in the #7 size shot.... a few that were lead, #6's....

All in your budget my friend.... .555 -.572 are the range constrictions I saw...

Griz, it was the Jelly Head choke tube I was looking to buy and was going to try Heavi Shot #7 in my shotgun. Used to have a 12 gauge Remington 1187 that I had sold early in the spring. Wish now that I had not sold it since I am going to get serious about turkey hunting and want to try duck hunting again. But, I will make the 20 gauge work. \:\)

You can always buy you another 12ga later.... The #7's should work fine, just have to pattern your gun and see how they do and what your effective range will be.

Another thing I would suggest you do is polish your barrel... you can find the directions here:

http://oldgobbler.com/Forum/index.php/topic,182.0.html

One thing it didn't mention was not to let the brush/pad run out the end of the barrel.... it will sling that black slurry all over the place.

If you are fairly mechanically inclined, you shouldn't have a problem.... if you don't want to fool with it, get it to me somehow and I will do it for you.... I have done most of mine and it helps with patterns and cleaning. I usually do a refresh every other season or so.
