I'm wanting to mount a low-power scope on a pretty nice side-by-side double-barreled shotgun (mainly for squirrel hunting).
I know many would ill advise putting a scope on a pretty nice double, but I want to explore the possibilities.
Anyone know a very experienced, competent gunsmith (greater Knoxville area preferred) who's mounted a lot of scopes on guns that weren't pre-drilled?
The side-by-side I'm wanting to do this on has a solid rib, and I see no reason this couldn't work.
Also have a very lightweight 20 ga. Winchester 101 I'd consider doing the same on if the vent rib could support it.

It would be interesting to see what the regulation of the barrels is when installing a scope on a double. I know double big game rifle makers go to a lot of trouble to get them regulated to place two shots to the same point of impact. What will you see with a shotgun. Tell us what happens.
I'm no help on the gunsmith to do that though. Ouch for the shotgun. With a solid center rib it shouldn't be all that hard to just tap about three holes for a base.

Can pretty much already tell you with this particular shotgun.
At 40 yards the left barrel (extra full) has a pattern center about 2 1/2 inches to the right of the right barrel (full). Placing a better aiming device shouldn't change this.
With the standard shotgun sights, the right barrel seems to hit dead-on, while the left barrel's pattern is centered @ 2 1/2 inches off to the right. With a scope, I would sight it in to center the tighter choked left barrel, or maybe split the difference between them.
With a solid center rib it shouldn't be all that hard to just tap about three holes for a base.
Exactly what I was thinking, but don't want to do it myself nor do I want someone doing it who hasn't done it a few times.

Thanks, and will do exactly that if no one can recommend a good gunsmith. I think Gander Mountain has a gunsmith, too.

The ribs on the 101s are notorious for coming loose.... mostly when shot alot.... May not be advisable on the 101... what is the model of the other SXS... Depending on how the barrels and rib were connected it maybe ok... Keep in mind the older they are the larger the possibility that the rib - barrel connections mayhave some deteriation - especially depending on how they are connected...

Bob bedded one of my Model 70's. He did a good job other than forgetting to wipe off the droplets of bedding compound from my stock.
