So I'm working on shooting with proper form namely keeping my head straight and level looking at the target. The 30" ATA on my Hoyt Spyder does not allow the string to touch my nose.
What ATA are you shooting? I want to go to a 34" ATA.

The last few years have found me going with the trendy bows in the 28 to 32 inch A-A range. Those seem to be the flagship bows of each company. I also noticed my shooting consistency had went down but attributed that to just getting older.
Then I hopped up to a 36" A-A bow that I was planning on target shooting with and BAM...found my consistency again. I have now decided to use the 36" A-A for a hunting bow and my target bow is 40" 5/8. It will be a long time before I own another bow under 34" A-A...seems like at my height and frame, a 36"+ A-A bow really shoots well for me and fits me well.

The increased string angle of a short ATA will cause the lack of string contact with the nose . You might be able to move your peep down and try that . I like to draw back a few times , anchor on my nose with my eyes closed and then open my eyes and see where the peep ends up , then adjust the anchor and peep . Every bow will be a little different distance from loop to peep , based on the ATA and string angle .

The problem is with the 30" ATA I have to dip my head forward to get string/nose contact. I want to keep level and have nose/string contact.

I like at least 30 and honestly try to stay with 32+. I shoot a lot better with longer ata bows.

I honestly don't see any advantage to a bow shorter than 34" . I know manufacturers like to market shorter bows for hunting for maneuverability and limb clearance in a treestand , but in all the years I have hunted from treestands , I have never had a limb contact a branch or my stand . I have hunted with bows over 45" ATA in the early days of compound bows .

They work well for me. I have done a lot of bow hunting out of a ground blind. I like the shorter ata for that type of hunting.

I sit down in my ground blind and shoot . I have about 12" of clearance on each end of my bow cams with a 34" ATA . Non issue there for me . Another thing to remember about bow geometry is that most bows have limbs that are parallel , or beyond parallel . So once the bow is at full draw , the limbs are flexed beyond parallel , and the length of the riser , limb angle , size of the cams , etc. will determine clearance , when the Limbs go beyond parallel . So the difference in ATA might not be the same based on those factors . Food for thought.........

I never gave ATA a thought. But I also never saw a really great shot, shooting a short bow.

34 ATA feels great for me. Not against longer bows but not a fan of going under 34 ATA.

I can shoot my xforce ss well enough. any accuracy issues is far outweighed by the maneuverability.

I don't know much about bows. But I know what I have used and what works for me....now take this with a grain of salt because its just speculation on my part. But I had a 03 hoyt cybertec that had a 35 inch ata. And a 6 5/8 brace height. I could shoot it well and grouped good at thirty yards in... And for various reasons I just haven't bow hunted much since moving to tn, mostly due to kids and what they had going on...so three years ago I sold my bow and have not shot a compound bow since. I have shot a recurve a few times but...
Now this year I hit the woods a few times with a xbow and realized 1 i now have time to bow hunt and 2 I really don't feel the same or an advantage using one in a climber esp...so yesterday I bought a pse drive.
The drive fit everything I was looking for in a bow...for a better price then I had budgeted for( happy wallet stash). But here is the point. It's ata is only 30.5 but its brace height is 7.5... I shoot a kisser button for one point and side tip of nose for second point.... I have no trouble finding these two points and I am already shooting better groups then my long hoyt shot. Best group today was last group of four, all four has less then a finger width between them at 20 yards...at 40 yards I was hitting about two inches apart. But only shot it a few times just setting up my sight.
So basically what I am saying. I wonder does brace height have more to do with how well a bow shoots then ata lenght. When I had my hoyt I shot all the time. Had target set just outside my shop and bow is in my shop... But for not to have shot in three years I am tickled with my short ata bow and how well its shooting

RE: Brace height vs ATA length.
I am going to say there is a combination of things that go together to make a forgiving bow. Just having a high brace height wont make the bow forgiving. A good example are the very short A-A bows with 7-8 inch brace heights. Neither does having a very long A-A bow with a short brace height. But a combo of the two plays out to forgiving bows.
The odd thing...you can have certain bows that by spec are "perfect" and ideal for what we would consider a forgiving bow, and they still shoot horrible. Cam systems, timing of cams, syncing of cams, properly spined arrows, and much more go into the accuracy of a bow. A great example of this was with a bow I owned not long ago. I had a K&K Vindicator. Spec wise....long riser bow, 35" A-A length, 7 1/8" brace height. Yet that bow was the most horrible bow I've ever tried to tune. Wouldn't broadhead group for anything. Horrible.

Same here. I would not consider a bow less than 34 inches ATA, and prefer an inch or two longer than that. Just look at what good spot archers shoot. It's all about the laws of physics.

My Z7 Extreme was 28" and I loved it. Will probably buy another this spring, or maybe the 30" Helim. Either way I like the below 32" ATA myself. To each his own though.

I just sold my 2013 Strother Wrath SHO. The 30"ata was simply to short for my liking. I have replaced it with the 2013 Hoyt Spyder Turbo.
