Anyone ever tried locating coyotes early morning before daylight. In some areas i have almost limitless access to property and i was thinking i could save some leg work if i located some dogs from the back roads with a howler.

Prob with doing that is they are territorial, so IMO its better use a siren because howling can actually bring them in. You also take the chance of busting yourself or educating them if they hear or see you pull up and then you call. I dont do it just because they arent always vocal so they could be there and just not respond.

I HAVE DONE IT WITH A SIREN AND A HOWLER. I HAVE FOUND OUT THAT MANY TIMES EEVN WHEN COYTES REPSOND TO THE HOWL, THEY DO NOT RESPOND TO THE CALL. I BELIEVE IT IS JUST BETTER TO TAKE THE TIME SPENT LOCATING AND JUST AN EXTRA FEW SETS

A locator howl is one my most productive sounds the last thirty minutes of light. I'm not talking about the whole yip yap pack sound from a e-call but a long drawn out howl with a mouth call seems pretty effective.

yep. we would located about an hour before shooting light. i was fun to here they were there, but we are just as successful it seemed on farms where there was no response. one morning that comes to mind, probably late 1990's, we located dogs with a siren on tow different farms. we also called two different farms that initiated no response from the siren. all farms were within 4 05 5 miles from each other (arrington area). we were 0 for 2 on sets on the farms were we got a response. we were 2 for 2 on the farms where we got no response from the siren- we killed a lone dog and half a breeding pair.
