After this past weekend and having two of the best deer jerky's I've ever eaten, my tastebuds have talked me into trying to make my own jerky....

What are you guys thoughts on a budget friendly meat slicer and dehydrator.

You don't need either. You can cut the jerky into natural slice of muscle groupings with a knife. You can also do the Jerky in your oven by propping the oven door open slightly and laying the meat on metal screens. All you need is a recipe.

You can also used ground meat. The first time I did my own, I did hand cut strips, after that I went to the ground method because it was easier and the flavor is mixed completely through the meat.
Over the yrs. I have purchased the goodies to do large batches of jerky, grinder, jerky gun, dehydrator, etc.

But, all you need is the ground meat, the spice mixture and your oven as Poser stated above. Before I got the jerky gun to make sticks and strips, I used a round spoon and put a ball of meat on wax paper and flattened it out with a pan and made jerky chips. Same result, different shape.

When I do jerky strips in the oven I just run toothpics through the ends of the strips and hang them crossways from the oven rack. Make sure you line the bottom of the inside of the oven with aluminum foil because the drippings will make a mess.

I have no idea what a dehydrator costs nowadays, but if you can get one that has good reviews (try outdoor retailers and Amazon), it could be worth it. Reason being, you can make the batch in the evening and it's finished in the morning with no babysitting.

You probably save a few bucks on electricity too, versus the oven being propped open. I guess it just depends on whether this will be a normal thing for you or not.

I also like to use the dehydrator for other things, like dried fruit. Banana slices are high on the list for me. You can make lots of hunting snack-type food with produce from the grocery store or garden.

As far as making jerky goes, be sure you understand the difference between a 100% home-made jerky seasoning and some of the store-bought ones. The biggest difference is the cure (preservative) that comes with the store-bought ones. If you elect not to use any preservative, be aware of the limitations on shelf life, particularly if you leave it out on the kitchen counter instead of refrigerating.

what poser says, I cut muscle groups into thin slices preferably diagonally across the grain, but I dont prop the oven door open because at lowest temp (170) it does not stay hot with the door cracked for some reason. Maybe if I put up the temp and crack the door it will work better. Jerky still seems to dry out fine with the door shut, after all the oven does have built in vents.

I havent got the recipe or drying time down the way I want it yet, tastes good, but not what I'm looking for. I have got some recipes on here I can dig up and will also experiment a bit.

dehydrator is safer and cheaper. plus, the heat is more consistent. you can buy them off ebay all day for 30. get a top heating kind. much less cleanup

I use a nesco dehydrator and I get nesco seasoning from amazon.com . I use my ground deer burger . Make some really good jerky

My dehydrator bit the dust and I bought a new one for like $60 bucks.

DEFINATELY go with a top heating unit. As redblood said, much easier clean up !!!

thats how i do mine, i use a gas oven and i think the lowest setting is about 170 or so also i keep it on one side for about 2 hours and flip for another 2, but every batch is a little different
