Took out a 2-1/2 yo spike. I'm not a believer in cull bucks, but this one I believe needed to be out of the gene pool

Well you can't age a dead deer by looks. Saw the deer for 10 minutes before I got "trigger happy" as you put it and I looked at his teeth to confirm it was 2-1/2.

I remember seeing a spike several years ago that had to have at least 15" spikes. I hesitated to shoot and he was gone. I think he was 1.5yrs old though - that was my reason for thinking he might develop better headgear later. A 2.5yr old spike is not going to ever have decent antlers based on the studies that I've seen.
