Finally, FINALL bought a boat.

The wiring looks like a rat put it in. Wires going here, ther and everywhere, plus random wires that just stop.

Started pulling the 3 miles of electrical tape off yesterday and following the wires. Many of them need to be replaced. I know that I'm supposed to use tinned marine grade wire, but read that I could use a larger gauge asw wire. Also, as this is my first boat, I'm unaware as to where to get marine wire.

Is it ok to use automotive primary wire to rework some of this? Would putting it in a cable guard be advised ?

Thanks and Merry Christmas.

Solder and heat shrink and you should be just fine.I would go one size bigger on the wire though.
I would rather be tried by 12 than carried by 6.

You should be good with a general automotive grade 16ga. primary wire with the exception of the Battery to starter connections(use larger cable)
If you solder and heat shrink all connections you will be fine, they do make a crimp connector that has low temp solder and heat shrink already combine in one easy to use terminal, but they are not cheap. They make for quick/clean work though.

Check out Del their prices are good and the quality of product is great.
