Benny is a great guy. Amazing fisherman... there's not much in freshwater or salt that he doesn't know how to catch. He has done a local cable fishing show around here for 20 years. He was nationally syndicated for a while.
Benny is like most fishermen (including me), he's been known to fudge on weights. However he and his wife both have multiple IGFA records, so they are pretty darn good at eyeballing weights.
I'm not sure I ever got to see the video we shot that day (below Watts Bar Dam I think?). But I know we caught some quality fish.
As for weight... it is more determined by girth than it is length. I've caught 20-inch smallies that didn't weigh 4 pounds. Than I've caught other 20-inchers that weighed 5 pounds-plus.
There is a tried and true formula for calculating weight. I trust it more than I do most scales. length x girth x girth divided by 800 = weight
22-inch fish with 15-inch girth... 22 x 15 x 15 = 6.18 lbs.
22-inch fish with 13-inch girth ... 22 x 13 x 13 = 4.6 lbs.
In other words, telling the length of a fish is only half the story when it comes to weight.
BTW, if that video is online, post a link to it please.
