I fall into this category. Started out with a 500 and about 45 was the longest I'd shoot. With the 835 and magblends I can kill them at 60. Killed one at 58 that I ranged after killing him but thought he was around 50. That said IMO one of the best parts of turkey hunting is getting them in close. Whether I kill them then is a moot point as I figure I won regardless. I prefer they be 30 yards and in but like knowing I can kill him out at 60 if he won't come any closer. I've patterned my gun to know exactly what it will do though but again my preference is 30ish and in.

Somebody NEEDS to start preaching ethics to hunters. Have you seen how many threads there have been about lost deer? Do you see all the bragging about how far this one and that one can kill a turkey? I saw one guy on another turkey forum bragging about killing a turkey at 86 yards! What fool would attempt such a shot? I believe the hunting community is becoming more and more a bunch of idiots shooting up the woods hoping for a miracle so they can run home and post it on the net. It can't even be blamed on young hunters. They have few ethical role models to follow.

Sorry I did not start this thread to get arguments started about the farthest shots. I was just curious as to who stuck with the 3 inch shells instead of 3.5. Have heard about the 80 yard shots to and think its ridiculous.

I have been told/read about people getting better patterns with a 3" shell in a 3.5" chamber than using a 3.5" shell.... Try and see what happens....

Not sure why anyone would shoot steel at a turkey when there are so many better things available. Steel is absolutely pitiful on ducks and I can't imagine it's much better on turkeys.

To me 3" patterns better. Ive got no problem pulling the trigger on one out at 45 yards. The best things to do is try different loads and chokes.

My favorite load ever and ever has been and probably the best that ever will be was the old Remington Hevi-shot. I had an 11-87 with an extra full remington choke and I shot them high-quality green, remington hevi-shots. These were 3'' loads 50-55 yards was not problem and don't care what anyone says about taking long shots.
But anyways, I wish they still made them like that. The new regular Hevi-shot brand Hevi-shot patterns real well, but unless you kill every other time you go the shells become a pain. after so much loading and un-loading, the brass rim gets bummed easy and gets to where they cant eject and even hard to reload. The ends come apart too after a while, allowing that white stuff to get all into the guns action and bbs start coming out.
they shoot great but I hate them and will never use them again because they fall apart.
remington 4x6s patterned really well. Federal Mag-shok lead patterns well. Winchester extended range patterns well. The only load I never have liked are the winchester supremes that cost like 5 dollars a box. They pattern terrible and looked only to be good up to about 25 yards.

And steel shot is illegal, but I do not know why anyone would want to use it. It just passes through the animals while lead goes in and expands and makes shapes and tears way more tissue.
