Keep in mind there are young inexperienced hunters here trying to learn the right way to do things. I wish this forum had a rule like old gobbler where you cant even mention shots over 50 yards.
I bet that's a good rule, keeps people from bashing others for "unethical" shots. I know a gun or two that can kill a bird over 50 yards. A guy on here (killminister) killed at least two over 50 yards with his new setup (more expensive ammo though). If your gun can do 50+ yards then why should someone bash it? I know mine wont do 50 very well so i will not take that shot but did kill one at 45 this fall and it flopped on the ground and never took off again.

I know I am one of the young ones here that is learning but don't think someone taking a 60 yard shot with their gun will make me take a 60 yard shot with mine. I know my limits. I've killed a few birds and the only one I knew I hit that got away was shot with a bow at 20 yards. I am a bit shy of bow hunting turkeys now.

why is it 40? A lot of people kill consistently over 40. What's the reasoning behind the rule? I don't think I'd fit in very well at OG which is one of the reasons I have not registered there.

Catman, I shoot 3.5 inch hevishots. I've tested numerous chokes. I have had custom work done to my barrel. I have a leupold scope. I don't shoot past 50 yards. Ask REN. We watched a nice Longbeard walk all the way around us at 55 yards and I wouldn't shoot. It only takes one lucky pellet to kill a turkey but you can't bank on that one lucky pellet. When I pull the trigger, I am going to know without a shadow of a doubt that bird is going to die. I don't bank on lucky pellets. But I have ethics.

So between 50 and 55 yards, your pattern goes from guaranteed kill to 1 lucky pellet? Weird pattern

No smartasss, but ethical hunters set limits for themselves. If I can't get him inside 50 he won that day. I'll try him again tomorrow. But I'm not so bloodthirsty that I am going to risk feeding a bird to the coyotes.

They set a limit so the discussion can remain intelligent instead of a bunch of clowns bragging about how far they can shoot.

I understand setting the personal limit, makes sense. But can you say anything without talking down on people who don't fit your personal standards? I still don't get why some people think there is only one right way to hunt and preach it on people. I love killing a few hens in the fall but name one time I have told you that you should kill hens too. I may be a smart arse but I am usually open to learning and I think I'm a lot more open minded than people like you. I'm glad you have a strong sense of ethics but please stop pushing your ways on other people and tearing them down if they do something that doesn't follow your doctrine.

That's not the reason at all. It's to try to keep the chest beaters from leading inexperienced hunters from taking stupid shots. Plus, 40 yards was always the golden rule of turkey hunters until modern ammo and chokes, and most old turkey hunters still see it as the standard.
