Fishing line getting caught behind the prop is bad for cutting the seal to the lower unit and letting water get in there.
Before it gets too cold (if your motor is stored outside), you probably need to check the conditon of the lower unit lube. If it is "milky", you have a seal issue and need to replace the seal and put in new lube. If water gets into your lower unit and freezes, it can crack your lower unit and then you will have to replace the whole deal.

I had a guy make a prop guard for a little 5hp jon boat motor. He used a pitch fork head. Pretty simple design and definitely keeps the prop off the bottom. If you are interested in going that route I could prolly get a picture up.

Not trying to argue, but I've only seen one bushing that I could see was damaged by looking at it. If you painted it, you have to paint a part of the output shaft and a part of the prop, as the bushing may be spun on the prop side or the shaft side. If it is slipping, it can only be the bushing... unless you are going fast enough to get air under the boat. If your engine has good compression, you can SOMETIMES tell by turning the prop by hand (ignition off) while in gear. Try it both directions. The engine should turn with the prop (watch the flywheel). This really only works on 4cyl and bigger engines.
Note... 4 cylinder.... not 4 stroke

I forgot about the pitchfork! A TWRA guy at Williamsport told me about that trick.
Urban hunter - my motor is only a 5 horse and I can easily turn the engine by hand with the prop in gear. Ill check the paint mark that I made.

Why did they quit making that motor? I've never heard anything bad about them. I was in a boat last summer with a 9.9 Johnson and his buddy had the little Briggs on his and our boat couldn't keep up!
Coleman is making one now that might be the same thing with a different name but I'm not sure.
