Often 3" shells will pattern better than a 3.5".

I know guys that have Mossberg 835 guns and say they have killed birds at 55-60 yards. I shoot a Mossberg 500 with 3" and have killed at 45 yards. I like to get'em a lot closer than that.

I've seen my dads old 500 kill em at 55+ that was with the old remington hevishot

I now hunt with a Mossberg 500 so the 3.5" isn't an issue for me. However, I've got the 3.5" chambered turkey barrel for my New England break action. Let me tell you what. I know how the gun kicks with just 3" shells, and there's no way on God's green Earth I'd think of hunting with the tall 3.5" shells. No sir! They were CRAZY to even suggest someone shoot those shells out of a light single shot shotgun!

3.5 inch 1 and 9/16 shot BB steal shot just wrecks em..... lol..3inch 2 ounce 5 shot,the winchester shells you get at walmart for 9 dollars a box.. 55-60 yards their died.

Here we go. As always, this is going to turn into who can take the longest most unethical shot with the cheapest ammo. Keep in mind there are young inexperienced hunters here trying to learn the right way to do things. I wish this forum had a rule like old gobbler where you cant even mention shots over 50 yards.
