No real ritual here, I simply look up and give thanks to the Lord

Not a ceremony really, but when I get to the animal I kneel down beside the deer and say a prayer thanking God for what he has provided and for the animal that is laying before me and then I take a few minutes for reflection on everything that just happened and just sit back and enjoy the moment before "the work" begins.

I thank God then look at it a moment if its a buck, tell my friends if its a buck, then start the tag, gut, drag, check, process.

What I do, almost to a T. Only difference is I lay my hand on the shoulder of the deer as I give thanks.
Might sound strange but that's what I have done since the first one.

No "ritual", just whip out my smartphone and check it in and fill out my blank permanenet kill tag. Shed clothes I don't want bloody and commence to gutting, dragging and loading on a 4Wheeler. And even though Im 48 years old now, I still call my dad and share the story with him. He doesn't hunt anymore but still loves talkin' bout it.

I have no defined routine per say, but I do always give thanks to the animal with a moment of respect. Occasionally, especially have after hard won hunt with a specific deer, I'll enter a deep, introspective mood either once I get home and really start to take things in, or sometimes, on the spot right there in the woods. I must admit, that on occasion, after killing a specific animal that I hunted or had multiple encounters with, I get this melancholy, introspective feeling that the woods is going to miss this deer. When that is the case, I'll often pick up my guitar and play "Fly Eagle Fly" by the Marshall Tucker Band. For some reason, that song always feels like the final chapter in a hunting story.
