I have a 2007 yamaha rhino and the brakes are making a grinding sound when you hit them fairly firm. Sounds like metal on metal. It started out doing it only in reverse but over the weekend noticed it when going forward. Could something just have gotten in them or does it sound like it needs new breaks? Only got 230 hours and 1000 miles on it.

Check the pads and could be mud or rocks

I'm no mechanic so is this something fairly simple I could do by taking the tires off and visually inspecting or should I take it in to the shop?

I mean you could but if you look at the pads and they are worn then you should replace them. But if you think they are dirty then just clean them. I wouldn't take it to the shop unless absolutely necessary.

10-4. I may give it a shot. If the pads are just dirty is there anything special to cleaning them? Just use water and no soap?

It seems to be a very common problem with this machine, premature brake wear and noise, sounds like a design flaw to me.
You may have to replace the pads either frt or rear, or both after inspection.
