Took our youth group caroling in the neighborhood where the church office sits. There's about 40 of us, so we broke into two groups and went different directions. Somehow I got the lion's share of middle schoolers. Yay.
It's rather sad, actually, that such a fun and beautiful tradition is nearly non-existent in our culture. Truth is, we are probably one of the most antisocial cultures in the world as goes actual, physical interaction, and it really shows. I always have to coach our teens on how to act and not act, what's acceptable and what's not, when we go out on an interactive event like this; but I'm not able to coach the houses we visit.
We had a few houses that reacted very well, bringing their kids, standing in the doorway while we sang no more than two verses and a parting "We wish you a Merry Christmas" while two of our kids ran up to give out candy canes to the family. Other houses were not so kind. Many refused to come to the door. Some came and looked out and went back to the TV. One clever homeowner simply clicked his lights off when we rang the bell.
The best was the grandma-type that came out and saw us, waggled an index finger, and disappeared. Not quite sure, we sang on. Someone peeked from an upstairs window blind. A minute later, she and the waggling finger did another drive-by. We sang a half-throttle. The upstairs peeker disappeared. On her third trip to the door, she brought out a little girl in pajamas and had her go sit on the porch bench, and ran back in. We sang on. Then she came back with a smaller brother, also PJed, and put him on the bench, and sat herself. The mother appeared in the doorway holding an infant. By this time we'd been singing more than we usually did for a house, but when we stopped, grandma said, "Another one, please!" So we did. And then another, on request. It was the interchange of the evening for all of us.
I think it may have helped that they were an immigrant family, and didn't realize they were supposed to ignore us.

Nimrod, you are a good person to be doing all that you do with the youths. I applaud you, and thanks for taking the time.
