I was wondering if any of you would be interested in having a hunt at Meadowbrook Game Farm in Sumner County? I have had a ball hunting over there myself through the years. Richard and Ms. Wilma Denning (owners) are some wonderful folks. I'm proud they are friends of mine. Anyway, I thought it would be a great way to meet new members. Also, it might be the first time that some folks have had a chance to hunt Pheasant. If you enjoy watching some top notch dogs work and have a chance hunting behind them, then you will thoroughly enjoy this hunt. I spoke with Richard last night and he said that he could accomodate up to 30 folks in a day if need be, of course that would be morning and afternoon hunts. Depending on how we broke the birds up (#Pheasant vs #Chukar vs #Quail), it should cost $140 or less per person. BTW, that includes cleaning and packaging of the birds. I figure having it around the end of Feb or the first of March on a Saturday would be good. The weather should be getting better by then, and everybody will be getting itchy to get back outdoors. Richard also said that we could set up a bar-b-que and do some cooking if we want. I'm gonna post a link to their websight below (if this is not okay mods please delete). If any of you get the Farm Bureau magazine, you will see one of their dogs on the cover of the November issue along with a story inside. Please check your schedule and make sure that you will be available, as we will have to give as accurate a number as we can the day before. It's looking like it will have to be on either Feb 23rd or March 2nd. To book a whole day as this, we have to plan early as they already have some reservations in Feb booked. Let me know what ya'll think. Thanks.

What can we expect for that price with that many people? Is this an all day thing? Half day? Horse and buggy with dogs? How many birds released? Etc.

Diehard, take a look at their websight if you get a chance. It will show you several packages and how they are structured. Our deal (if we have enough people), will have some extra birds. I think for every 10 paid hunters, there are extra birds figured in for free. Now, knowing Richard as I do, I assure you he will do us right. If we have more than 12 or 13 people, it will have to be an all day deal...which, imo, would be great! It would give a chance for ALL to meet/greet and socialize during the middle of the day.

I would love to do something like that. Always wanted to bird hunt and Grandpa passed away before we got to go. Don't know what things will look like around then, but you can mark me as "Tenative" with a decision the week prior.

If you are familiar with the area you might want to post some information on hotels in the area.
I am sure man and I will be coming up the Friday afternoon prior to the hunt and spending the night.

I figure more might do that also.

Portland, Tn is about 15 minutes West of Meadowbrook Farms. There are 2 motel/hotels that I know of.
Deerfield Inn (615)323-0001

Comfort Suites (615)325-8887
(By I65)

Gallatin, Tn is about 20 minutes South of Meadowbrook Farms. It definitely has more restaurants to choose from, and it also has a Super Wally World. Here are some of the numbers:

Hampton Inn (615)206-9595

Jameson Inn (615)451-4494

Comfort Inn (615)230-8300

I normally use a 12 gauge, with #6 or #7 1/2 shot.

Seems to work fine for me.

Pheasants will come up slow at first, but if you let them get plained out they can move on.

Chukar are a little faster getting off the ground.

And obviously, the Quail will scatter fast.

Yes. We will have extra birds for sure.

Just depends on how we break it up (#Pheasants vs #Chukar vs #Quail) how many extra birds we'll have.

Just for example we could say that we wanted 50% Pheasant, 30% Chukar, and 20% Quail.....or any combination we wanted for that matter. He(Richard) would then determine how many extra birds that equated out too considering the number of hunters and the amount spent. Make sense?

I'd like to get an up to date total after the holidays, and then another one as we get closer to the date. Then, we'll know if we need the whole day, and we will be able to see who all can hunt the morning and who will need the afternoon hunt. Unless I'm mistaken, the morning hunts start at 8:00 am (CST) and the afternoon hunts start at 1:00 pm (CST). That should give both parties 3 or more hours to eat, socialize, etc.

Sounds good. Maybe Ruger can update your first post of the thread later on with the list of members confirmed for the hunt.
Similar to how he does it for the golf tournament, it works pretty well.

Just a thought.....

I may be interested in this. My grandfather mainly hunted pheasants and Rabbits in PA and talked about all the time, which is a big reason I hunt today.

I will be itching to get in the woods/field for sure by then.

I'm interested and may be able to offer up a bed or two when the time comes. I'm in Portland, 16 miles or so from there. There are two hotels on Hwy 52 as you come int town. Comfort Inn is newer and does have a lounge. There is also a hotel in whitehouse and in Franklin KY along with a super Walmart. Lafayette also has a super Walmart and a couple of motels.

I'm interested... see PM.

Oops, your PM's are full.

Provided it's on a weekend, I am interested in the hunt you're organizing. However I am especially interested if I could bring my dog.. a Labrador Retriever. She'll be a year old in March, and besides a waterfowl retriever, I'm looking forward to taking her to South Dakota pheasant hunting Oct. 2013.

I would love the opportunity to get her on a few preserve pheasant. Do you know if they would allow me to do that?

If not, I certainly understand. But if you can check and let know, I'd appreciate it.

Just FYI, if it makes any difference, I'd probably write about it.

Spoke with Richard today.

We are definite on March 2nd.

I'll try to go through the thread this weekend and count up how many folks are for sure gonna hunt.

Everybody, start thinking about if you want to hunt the morning or the afternoon hunt.

I figure those that have the furthest drives would probably want to hunt the morning? Don't know.

I can hunt either/or since I live close. I'll probably be there the whole day anyway, since I want to meet as many of you as possible.

Also, we need to decide if we want to cook during the middle of the day. I can probably secure a grill.

I'll be back on here this weekend.

I'm in for sure. Morning or afternoon, doesn't matter since I'm nearby.

If we end up grilling out, let me know if I can bring something.

BigSatt, is there anyone that wants to stay over and have another hunt Sunday morning. I thought I seen where Ruger and his son were wanting too.
If so put me down for that too.

I would prefer to hunt Sat morning so I could hang out with everyone later but morning or afternoon will be fine.

Sorry Arch-N, but they won't hunt on Sunday's.

You might be able to hunt Friday afternoon, but you would need to schedule that asap I would imagine.

LOL...absolutely.

If I can hit a few of them, then ANYBODY will be able to.

Don't worry about that. We will have fun for sure!

Is the final cost $140? Will the number of birds be what is shown on the website for a regular hunt plus a few extras? I and one other are a maybe. I need to check my fishing schedule. It looks like there will prob be thirty total. Is that the max number?

Yes, that should cover it.

I talked to Richard a few days ago and he said the max would be 32 to 33 people. That would be a big hunt.

Check your schedule Larry and let us know. Thanks.

I asked Richard that question.

He said that it would be fine for everybody to pay the day of the hunt.

However, we still need to give as accurate a number as we can the day before.

Shouldn't be a need for them. There are lanes bushogged parallel to each other through the cover. When the dogs go on point, the guide will go in and flush the bird if need be. You should be fine without chaps.

I spoke with Waynesworld and found out that he is an excellent cook!

As stated earlier, I'm pretty sure that I can secure a large gas grill. Wayne said that he has other cooking equipment that he can bring as well.

We should have approximately 3 hours downtime between morning and afternoon hunts.

Sooooo, do we want to cook? If so, does anyone want to bring food, or do we want to pool some resources and buy food to cook?

Let me know please.

Well, for whenever he gets back, I'd like to throw my hat in the ring for this hunt as well. I was hoping to hunt with RSIMMS, but once he found out I was in, he shouted something about a hairdresser appointment, and ditched.

Gonna see if I can talk another local TNDeerian into joining me.

Don't believe I had any particular preference as morning/afternoon goes.

Sorry I haven't been on here lately to update fellers. I had to go to Japan for 8 days. I didn't get back until late Saturday night.

Waynesworld, would you mind heading up a food list? I'll be more than happy to kick in something.

Less than a month away until the hunt! Looking forward to it more with each passing day!

Remember, the hunt is Saturday, March 2nd. Thought I would post that again, as I have had a few pm's from folks wanting to make sure they new the exact date.

Hate to hear that Arch-N.

Maybe it will go over well and we can have another one next year that you can attend.

And just saying they will throw in "some extra birds" doesn't really define what this includes. Not trying to be difficult, but I'm funny about knowing exactly what I'm paying for as I'm sure others are as well. Thanks.

That price includes cleaning and packaging of all the birds as well.

As far as how many "extra" birds, that will be determined by how many folks actually show for the hunt. There is no way that I can give you an exact number. Sorry.

It depends on how we decide to break it up between Pheasant, Chukkar, or quail.

I know we talked about this last night, I've not bird hunted since I was 12 or so, but love watching the dogs work. Or even hanging out after for the stories and some food with the hunters.

I am looking forward to this. I haven't quail hunted in many years. They are just to hard to come by in East Tennessee. I have never had the opportunity to shoot pheasant or chukar. I hope it is a good day for all involved!

Ok I will get a list for food I am thinking Burgers, Brats, Dogs, and My special BBQ country ribs. Then I will probably do fries and chips I think. Do we want a separate thread to post what people want to bring or would people rather just donate money and I can get the stuff. I use to do food for a fish/reef club and we would do donation thing and if there was extra money it would go to the children's hospital. My kids don't mind working if they are getting it as we have a special tie to that place, but it could go anyplace.

Think the Childrens hospital would be good for any money left over. Might be easier to just donate money & one person pick everything up this way something needed is not forgotten or overlooked.

just my thoughts

I agree with the charity.

I talked to BigSatt the other day. I was probably going come by and just talk with everyone, maybe watch the dogs work a bit. I haven't hunted birds since I was 12 or so and don't even own a shotgun right now.

But I'd be willing to come up and help with the food if you need another pair of hands.

It's no problem on my end. I'm always willing to offer labor for a good charity. And I was going to go up and just visit anyways, this makes the drive more worthwhile.

I don't even know if Waynesworld needs my help but I'll be there if needed regardless.

Folks, I'm posting part of a reply to a pm I had below. It may answer a few questions that some of you may have.

You don't need 4 or 5 shot.

6 or 7 1/2 will be fine.

Although the Pheasants are bigger birds, they tend to get up off the ground slowly. However, if you let them get plained out...they can move on.

Something orange...maybe a hat...will be fine. The hunt itself is very structured and safety is always in play. Once the dogs point, the handler will move in. There will be a shooter on each side of the handler, and there will be a backup shooter flanked to the side of each shooter. Also, another shooter will be responsible for the backdoor.

Probably WON'T need a bird vest unless you need it to carry your shells. Reason being, once we get a certain number of birds down in our group, the handler will periodically put them in a pile and radio for a pickup by one of the hired hands who will come out on an ATV and pick the birds up. He will then take them back to the lodge for the cleaning crew to process them.

We always used #6 shot for Pheasants, throw in some quail and 7 1/2 will do the job for both.

I wouldn't feel dressed if I went bird hunting without my bird coat!

I am looking at the weather and we may change the menu a little if it is cold may ad a soup and chili which is always great if you have hot dogs and fries chili dogs or chili cheese fries. It would be nice if I could get a rough count on thursday. Also BigSatt need to know if I need to bring a couple of tables to set up on and make sure that power is there and the bbq grill is available. Also is it gas or do I need coal? I lost your number so if you want to give me a call again if you want. Also any food allergies let me know as I do a lot of mixing of things \:\)

dont know if it had been answered if we needed to have our hunting license renewed before hunting there? as they expire tomorrow. unsure as to how that works on a farm such as this.

The morning hunt will start around 8:00 am.

We need to be there by 7:30 if at all possible.

The afternoon hunt will start at 1:00 pm.

Anyone hunting then needs to at least be there by 12:30.

We only have 6 people scheduled to hunt the morning hunt.

We need more than that.

I can hunt either and I'll be there in the morning.

Just post up if you can hunt the morning hunt, and I'll update later tonight or in the morning.

As far as setting up to cook, I talked with Richard last night.

He said that we would have access to electricity.

I forgot to ask him about tables though.

My plan is to take the grill over there tomorrow morning if I have time....if not, I'll obviously have it in tow Saturday.

It is a BIG charcoal grill. So if someone can bring 4 bags of Kingsford, let me know.

If not, I'll ask my wife to pick some up...no biggy.

A new hunting license is not required for this hunt.

I will repeat....You DO NOT NEED a new hunting license for this hunt.

Everyone will have to sign a release waiver however.

Since several of ya'll have said that you haven't hunted Pheasant and Chukkar before, I'm thinking about 50% Pheasant, 30% Chukkar and 20% Quail. What say ya'll.

Btw, I've got to get off here now. Got to go to work early. I will check back afterwhile before I call Richard to give him THE list. Thanks to all of you for your help.

I am SO looking forward to meeting and hunting with all of you.

I'm told that I act incredibly immature, if that will help fill the bill.

As pertains to bird percentages, don't give a rip. It's all great fun!

I guess from looking at the website I was thinking it would only be one type of bird. Maybe it was the wording of 4 pheasants 6 chukar OR 8 quail. I'm ok with pretty much any mix I guess. Killed a few pheasants and quail but never any chukar.

Posting for BigSatt, who is at work and can't--

Preds1, if you can come hunt in the morning and bring that charcoal, that is ideal. If you want to hunt the later shift, we could still use the charcoal by mid-morning so we can thaw out... er, cook lunch.

Diehard, if your crew runs into trouble, just give me or BigSatt a call. The morning hunt could be postponed an hour without hurting the time frame. I'll PM you the digits.

Anybody reading this thread this morning that's thinking "man, I sure would like to be hunting today".

All I can say is.......get ye stuff together, get in yo truck, and be there by 1:00 pm (central). We have a few spots open. So, no matter where you live in Tn(or Ky for that matter), you can still be there for the afternoon hunt. Come on!

See ya'll shortly.

Enjoyed hunting with Diehard Hunter, WGK and Beekeeper this AM. Only one bird got through, so we all shot well. Beekeeper did blow one away so it was only half a bird! Bennie, our guide, and his dogs Rita and Sam worked hard for us. Fun to hunt over dogs and watch them work. I've missed that.

Food was excellent! The chicken chili was the best and made a great meal for the day, which could not have been more perfect for an upland game hunt for a guy from Iowa. Thanks Waynesworld.

Thanks to BigSatt for putting the hunt together, what a great time!
Lets do it again next year.

How did the afternoon hunt go? Who killed all the birds? DA or Bubba must have killed them all. \:D

Not many groups have the skill and finesse to shoot a pheasant in the field with just the right amount of English to get it to fall into the parking area! (But we do!)

It was a fun time the girls had fun meeting all of you and cooking there only thing they request is that you all bring some more kids. They are looking forward to the next event and will show you all even more of there cooking abilities. But they said they may charge you a fee of some hunting knowledge or a place to go kill something. I think they are giving up hope on there father being a good guide \:\(

By the way some were worried about the donations covering the cost of the food. By my calcuations we did get the food used covered and will have some money to donate to Vandy.

So my immaturity level wasn't enough? Dang... But then, they're probably looking for immature and CUTE, so I can see why they would still be recruiting. If I can figure out a spot on public land to recommend to you all, I'll try.

Very glad to hear the food worked out. You and the gals were awesome cooks!
