What are deer eating?THESE PICS are from the lease Im on,about 700 acres which borders my land 68 acres. Its also pretty representitive of about 2000 +- acres that I have had a chance to see.

On my place,Ive done about all I can with food plots,fruit/nut trees, select cut etc.But seeing all this "empty space" makes me realize how little my efforts effect such a large area.

tHE ONLY THING I see for the deer to be eating in the big woods is some random green briar, and some honey suckle, but very little.

But there is no shortage of deer!Hoping the timber company will start some cutting soon, many large trees are ready to go.

Also, very low acorn production this year. There are many crop fields easily within the deers reach, but they have long been harvested.

Just acorns and briars (along with other random things). My dad watched a deer last weekend stand in the same spot eating briars for over 1 1/2 hours and didn't move more than 3 feet

Deer nibble on anthing they can reach, including the end-buds of every little sapling and wild grape vine they walk past.

If there really is "no shortage of deer," that particular property is not "supporting" the density present. They must be feeding in other areas, as the area pictured won't support more than about a dozen deer per square mile.

If the acreage is that large, it's possible that you have pockets of good-producing mast trees in that tract that you just don't know about. It's hard to thoroughly scout that much acreage and know for certain what is and isn't there. Since deer trails are often almost non-existent in open timber, it's even tough to follow the deer sign sometimes.

Like you said - the food must be there if there are that many deer. And they will find it...their lives depend on it \:\)

Deer could easily be accessing food off of a 700 acre property. Most have ranges larger than that.

No doubt, from the last low light pic, walk 1000 yards to corn and beans, but have been picked for months, who knows what else they could be getting to eat,I cant scout others propertys, just barren looking on the lease, and some neighboring propertys I can see from the line off the 4 whheeler, especially in the winter.
