Not so far fetched, marrying much younger women was a fairly common practice for the reason the writer stated...security for the woman, and housekeeping for the man. My great grandfather was 30 years older than my great grandmother who was his second wife.

I had a gggg uncle die in 2005 that was a son of a Civil War vet. He was the baby of 16 kids but my ggg grandfather was the oldest and was 40 when my uncle was born, his youngest sibling. My gggg grandfather was near 60 when my uncle was born. He was 101 when he died.

I still remember carrying him small game and fish and he would cook them immediately.

My grandfather was born in 1844 and was in the 7th Tn Cal. during the war. Discharged due to injury while hooking up some horses to a wagon or something.

My grandmother was a daughter to a confederate solider. She was born in 1920

My great grandfather and his brothers where confederate soliders. It is not that far of a streach.
