ARE YOU SERIOUS???? How in the world do the deer become radiological contaminated? I know it's Oak Ridge but how does this happen? Contaminated water? Food?

Primarily from food sources in contaminated areas. There are areas around ORNL that have radioactive contamination and sometimes deer get into it then venture out into the hunting areas. that is why they take a bone sample (to test for strontium) and a muscle sample (to test for cesium). I only know of one year when they ever found cesium and they traced it back to a leaking storage site. They get deer with strontium every year, but not very many.

Diehard, I agree that deer will move in all types of weather. I can tell you when I got to my truck at noon there was only one other truck anywhere closeby. This weekend was just discouraging, haven't been seeing deer, had high expectations and left just feelin burnt out. I think I've got maybe 3 or 4 more hunts left in me this year.

I hunted all day Saturday and saw nary a deer in the woods. I hunted in Scott County yesterday and saw one. I will always put in for Oak Ridge. It's fun to hunt but I wish the weather would have been better.

I think we all want to think Oak Ridge has the deer that it once had in earlier years. I get drawn alot and I am telling you the deer numbers are just not there anymore period. I bow hunted Park city this weekend saw one small yearling spike Saturday evening and had six hunters pass under my stand by daylight saturday morning. as usual.

I use to carry mail in Oak Ridge. It is un-freaking believable the number of big bucks that start showing up in residential neighborhoods once quota hunts start out there. They know what's going on.

Food for thought. Oak Ridge gets hunted only 6 days a year. I am a bow hunter, so I always hunt the bow only zones. A person would think a bow hunted area would have good numbers and you would see a few deer from stand like you would on private property, but case in point you dont, especially in past few years. Yes I see and harvest a good buck every now and then but rarely see the numbers of all deer . I think something has happened. Surely they all dont swim the lake and leave after scout day. But then again they might, who knows.

You also need to add to this the scouting days which in my opinion is just as noisy and hectic, if not more so, than the hunting days.

Me and my dad hunted Oak Ridge last year on the late gun hunt. Didn't see a deer the first day. I was walking along a grassy trail that boardered a thicket and I saw a doe standing in the thicket about 100 yards off. I shot and knew I missed as soon as I pulled the trigger. While I was trying to reload my CVA, there were no less than 12 white tails that I could see bobbing through the thicket. They're there, they just know better than to move. I ended up seeing 16 deer in one afternoon.
