If you'd fire him for his behavior any other time of year, fire him now.
There are a lot of other people who would be happy to be working near Christmas and 99% of them won't be growling at you.

....Ive got a new employee, who has a lot of issues doing what he is told. When lines are down, he knows he has to stay busy. But chooses to stand around with his hands in his pockets, when I approach him he just stares at me and then walks off. Now it has gotten to the point when I talk to him he will stop what he is doing and "swell up" and starts growling under his breath but he never says anything at ALL. I was told he has a brain injury from a wreck, I really dont want to fire him cause of Christmas. But this is getting to be an issue. Ive never had anyone growl at me before LOL What the world would you do LOL
Is this guy in the fire service? If he's new, has trouble doing what he's told AND growls at you, thats a total of 3 strikes. I'd fire him regardless of Christmas.

Have you asked him what the growling is about? I'd love to hear what he has to say.
If it's not a good enough response, firing him now will let him spend more time with family over the holidays.

You're not doing him any favors keeping him.. Regardless of what's happened to him, he has to learn to work/comply or he'll never survive as an employee anywhere.

If he thinks he is a mean dog he may also be thinking about taking a bite out of your leg. Treat him like a dog next time and tell him to go lay down.He could turn out to be the best pet you ever had.

Pull him aside, remind him of whats expected of him and tell him if he growls again, you'll slap him in the nose with a newspaper. And there are no more chances.

I can only hope that you have good documentation of his behavior and some type of progressive discipline in order because if this is civil service your gonna end up in court for sure. Good luck! Kinda makes ya wonder where the hell HR was during the hiring process???
