I just wondered what the policy is on GW's actually hunting themselves. Is this a vacation day type thing, or a perk of the job. Seems to be a frequent thing around here.

My nephew is interested in wildlife biology and has tons of questions and this one seemed to elicit all types of guesses from the peanut gallery.

If you think their actions aren't correct, contact the local regional office.

We encourage our officers to hunt and fish on their time off.

The Officers I know and went to school with hunt some in the late season and go out of state some, but not much more.

Tell your nephew to sit down and talk to an officer as they are a wealth of information on late nights, missed ballgames, missed holidays, and missed family events. Most are very dedicated and stretched extremely thin.

Although I share the same degree, I couldn't do what they do. They are unique individuals.

I would love to see the GW's hunting more for a couple of reasons. First is how can they truly recommend and regulate something they do not do? I know you have a law but it is not always black and white so I want someone who has hunted and knows how some things happen and can use some of his common sense that he/she has gotten in the field. Also if they are hunting they will be in the field where if they encounter a hunter not following the law they can take care of it. It would be nice if they hunted and even some times were not in uniform and hunting. This would be nice when they encounter one of those people that think it is fun to shot 22's to harass hunters.

When I was real young my dad owned a bar/restaurant in a small town in MN. We use to invite the police to come in and eat and even gave them free coffee and real cheap food. Basically covering the cost. So with the police officers would be part of the fun and could help and some times stop some problems. In the same way if we have GW in the field's they can do the same.

I'd be happy to talk with your nephew at any time. (615) 781-6580.

I'm not TWRA, but if your nephew LOVES to hunt and fish and is extremely passionate about it (like a lot of us are) I'd say a degree in Wildlife & Fisheries with aspirations to be a game warden is a bad choice. The times he will want to be in the woods will be the time he spends the most time working I imagine. Of course, you never said he wanted to be a GW, but he ought to talk to some of TWRA's biologists if that is the way he is leaning to see what their work life is like in the Fall. Not that you asked for it; nevertheless my opinion on the matter.

Another thing:

County Wildlife Officers are not only "on call" 24 hours a day, but they are law enforcement "back up" to the local Sherriff Dept.

Anytime an emergency call comes thru on the radio, county wildlife officers are expected to be 1st Responders, including intervening when the local liquor store is being robbed.

While there are many appealing aspects to being a County Wildlife Officer (or "Game Warden" as some call them), this is a "law enforcement" career with long hours and often little time to hunt & fish when it's the best time to hunt & fish. Not to mention, the pay (per hour) is relatively low compared to many other careers requiring a college education.

He is welcome to contact me as we'll. My students and I just started the first student wildlife society in tennessee at a two year school.

There are a lot of options for people with wildlife degrees besides working as a wildlife officer. People I went to school with work as biologists for the national park service, the us forest service, the us fish and wildlife service, and many other agencies. Some have opened uniques businesses in the private sector. I can give him the skinny on what the different schools require and how to get started.

actually my husband is a biologist for TWRA and is in Law enforcement and he does hunt as much as he can, which is not much because of his work, and has had his hunts interupted to do law enforcement work. like they said if he is passionate about hunting he might not want to become a game warden

I figured this might be the case, depending on the career path I'm sure. Regardless, I bet many of our local officers/game wardens/agents/biologists (whatever you want to call it) hunt out of state as much as they can so they can't be reached! \:\)
...and I wouldn't blame them one bit
