From my experience, ducks are harder to kill sitting on the water. When they are in the air their bellies are exposed. I would rather shoot them flying, but I would not hesitate to shoot one on the water either. As for shooting cripples, I would shoot with the motor running before letting a duck dive and losing him.

Nothing illegal about that either. I have never had a problem with it.

We'll shoot wounded ducks on the water. If they come in and we were eating or just didn't see'em, we keep a few rocks in the blind for that purpose. Rocks also help the dog go in the right direction.

Actually, I'm about 99.9% sure that it isn't against the law to have the motor down and running.

The TN statute, and I'm pretty sure the federal reg as well, says that the the boat can't be propelled by mechanical means. This means that all forward motion due to any mechanical means has to have ceased before shooting. It doesn't mean that the motor has to be up and not running.

With some of the old boat motors we had when I was younger, we were about half afraid to turn it off once we got it started LOL.

So putting out decoys in a lifelike spread, brushing the blind in well, and calling well enough to bring ducks to the water isn't sporting?

By the time ducks reach our state, you can be they have been called and shot at many times.... if the hunter does his part and gets them in close for a shot, that's what matters.

If I call a duck(s) into range, whether it sits on the water or flys within range, it will get shot at by me.... round here you take what you can get.... I like a return on my investments.

SCN, here is what I read in the Waterfowl Hunting Guide:

Restrictions

No person shall take migratory game birds:

•From or by means of any motor boat or sail boat unless the motor has been completely shut off and/or the sail furled and its progress therefrom has ceased.

Now, for hunting purposes that is absolutely reasonable...

But for finishing off cripples, a little leeway would be reasonable.

Don't have a duck in the hunt, but that right there is funny.... guess because I can relate. \:D

Trust me, the last situation you want to experience is being in a boat with motor problems.... it's around or below freezing, the water is whitecapping, and the wind is blowing you away from the boatramp!!! Cold rain, sleet, and/or snow only make it worse... \:D

Thanks. That probably is taken from the federal regs and supercedes ours. From that, the motor can be in the water, but is supposed to be shut off and the forward progress ceased before shooting.

My bad.
