Happened to me in Florida in mid 70's, bunch of yahoo's popping high caliber centerfire in my direction on purpose. I called the cops when I got to a pay phone.
No way would I tolerate that, I would engage the cops and press charges. You could have been hit and killed. Plus, it ruined a day in the field and those can be hard to come by.

Not to justify the guy's reaction at all, but:
1) You were trespassing
2) You continued trespassing after being called out on it
3) You seem to have a decent case for hunter harassment. I'm sure he didn't pick up all his brass.
This is still no reason to be shot at , my goodness he could have lost his life . This guy is a bonifided nut and I would at all cost avoid his side of the property , just not worth it !

Sounds like this cat needs to be locked up, I'd be at the local Pd making a report. If that went nowhere at the state attorney's office. I say this because the pd my say you can not prove it was him, we all know it is but that's there out. I believe my boys still have their potatoe gun you could use to rain down on him while he's trying to sleep!

A man knowingly shooting in your direction is attacking you using deadly force. Anytime someone points a gun or shoots at you the rules change. They force your hand. The caliber they are shooting is irrelevant.
You had 3 choices: leave, fight back, or sit there not doing anything.
In any case if it were me i would have called the police regardless of which response option was chosen.

There was no cellular service there...I sat behind the tree and waited him out, then left on the far side of the property...
I've heard the LE isn't real responsive in Morgan Co. but the DA for Roane is the DA there too...I guess I'll give him a call and seek guidance..
I had him out gunned, but I wasn't going to escalate a situation with an idiot..
