Went hunting in Morgan Co. yesterday afternoon on land I had written permission to hunt..
Property is 30 acres shaped like a T... thick pines from the road back 400 yards then pines on the left and hardwoods on the right side of the T's top..
Walked thru the pines to the start of the hardwoods and cut the corner toward the left side of the T to stay in the pines and not scent up the hardwoods then cut back to the right side of the T where my ladder stand was set up in the hardwoods...
About 20 feet from the property line, I hear a guy behind me yelling asking what I thought I was doing there. I told him I was walking to ____'s land to hunt..He said I had to get out of the area that the land I was on was posted (there were no signs anywhere). I apologized for straying onto the wrong property but I wasn't leaving since I was 20 ft. from my permitted hunting ground (my property owner had surveyed and had ribbons on trees) and I'd be off the wrong property in 2 minutes and I was.
He walked away and I walked 20' up and 25 yrds right on the permitted land and climbed into my stand. Suddenly 22 shots started from the direction the guy had gone. I could hear the bullets hitting in the pines where I'd been 10 minutes earlier. They were hitting about 100' from me and were hitting on the land I was hunting legally. I climbed down and sat behind the tree on the ground. The shots continued for about an hour. I couldn't get a cell signal or would have called the law. I'd of gladly taken a trespassing charge to get a "reckless endangerment" one on the jerk. I don't know if he was trying to scare off the deer or me. I don't think he knew exactly where I was and I didn't want to holler and give him my position so I sat there and waited. After about 40-50 shots over an hour's time they stopped. I got up and still hunted my way back to the truck taking a route on the other side of the woods.
I'm still pissed. I had considered firing my 30-06 into the base of a tree 10 yards or so in front of me in the direction of the 22 shots, but I decided against that.
I'm not from Morgan Co. but locals have told me that LE response might have been slow if at all if I could have called them.
I guess the jerk's plan worked cause I'm not going back, but my bud who owns the land plans to have a heart to heart with the owner of the other property. I've been told my adversary probably wasn't the guy who owns the other property but likely his son in law.
I used to worry bout tree stand falls. Now I worry bout the blaze orange being a target instead of protection....

Not to justify the guy's reaction at all, but:
1) You were trespassing
2) You continued trespassing after being called out on it
3) You seem to have a decent case for hunter harassment. I'm sure he didn't pick up all his brass.

I apologized and left the property as quickly as possible...walked 20'to the line and exited as quickly and politely as possible.
How is that continuing to trespass? I left the property as quickly as possible.
I just didn't leave the area as instructed....I stayed on permitted land..His shots were landing on my buds property that I was legally on.

I had spotted a buck up there 3 weeks ago and thought I had his travel pattern figured and only had an afternoon to hunt and the wind seemed right for the stand...
I shouldn't have strayed 40 feet off the property line going to the stand and cut the corner on the T but the land wasn't posted and I didn't want to walk across the trail I'd seen the buck use.
I've hunted there several times this year after work cause it's a short drive for me. My bud wants to sell his property there. I told him to tell the other owner he ought to buy it if he wants to control the whole area. If the other guy won't buy it, put up a sign "Future Home Of Morgan Co. Deer Club"...That might do it.

You should have just went to the lease!!! My bud wants to sell his property there. I told him to tell the other owner he ought to buy it if he wants to control the whole area. If the other guy won't buy it, put up a sign "Future Home Of Morgan Co. Deer Club"...That might do it.

There are a lot of ways to get things accomplished. Shooting at me or in my direction repeatedly is not one of them.
That would not have ended nicely.

There's a guy who owns land two tracts over(about 1/2 mi) from where my property lines are at, and when he hears me go down the road during the evenings to hunt, he almost immediately brings out his weapon of choice and starts firing. One evening he fired over 200 rnds from what sounded like a 9mm , 15 rnds at a time, over and over and over... Years ago, I heard a whizzing go over my head, once. I won't hesitate to call the law if it happens again. Now I surely don't condone trespassing of any sort, but this guy needs to be dealt with imo.

I would have literally been in fear for my life and I think my 308 or 40's would have trumped his 22. At the very least, I would have gone to the sheriff. I wonder if he's been growing dope, has a still or is cooking meth over on the other side. You left the property and he had no business shooting at you. I do consider shooting the direction he knew you were should be considered shooting AT you.
