Combination of weather and a cancelled hunt will possibly translate into a much better hunts next year.

Are those whole or field dressed weights?

No ages on those deer?

A lot more deer survived the hunts than usually do. Next year should be a banner year out there........if people show up and hunt. I bet less than 50% of the people drawn showed up for the hunt this weekend.

Diehard, I saw 10 deer on the scout day. Go back and see 0. I didn't show up yesterday. The weather was horrible. Every Dec hunt I've had before this one it's been lows in the low 20's, highs around 40.

ARE YOU SERIOUS???? How in the world do the deer become radiological contaminated? I know it's Oak Ridge but how does this happen? Contaminated water? Food?

My point exactly. There was a lot of human activity in the woods on the scout day, getting the deer up and moving. Take away that activity and the deer do not need to move. Sometimes we are our own worst enemy. The belief that the warm weather has the deer chained to a tree keeps hunters out of the woods. When hunters stay out of the woods, they do not have to move. When they do not have to move, sightings drop.

I had a stand where they were coming and going from feeding to bedding and I saw plenty. I would have no doubt seen more if there had been more people stomping around in the woods.

I blame the poor results on a lack of hunter pressure, and I blame the lack of pressure on the weather. If people had shown up for the hunt, they would have pushed deer. When deer get pushed, people get shots. When people get shots, they push more deer.

Deer do not vaporize when it gets warm, they just do not move as much, unless they have to.

Primarily from food sources in contaminated areas. There are areas around ORNL that have radioactive contamination and sometimes deer get into it then venture out into the hunting areas. that is why they take a bone sample (to test for strontium) and a muscle sample (to test for cesium). I only know of one year when they ever found cesium and they traced it back to a leaking storage site. They get deer with strontium every year, but not very many.

Diehard, I agree that deer will move in all types of weather. I can tell you when I got to my truck at noon there was only one other truck anywhere closeby. This weekend was just discouraging, haven't been seeing deer, had high expectations and left just feelin burnt out. I think I've got maybe 3 or 4 more hunts left in me this year.

I hunted all day Saturday and saw nary a deer in the woods. I hunted in Scott County yesterday and saw one. I will always put in for Oak Ridge. It's fun to hunt but I wish the weather would have been better.

I think we all want to think Oak Ridge has the deer that it once had in earlier years. I get drawn alot and I am telling you the deer numbers are just not there anymore period. I bow hunted Park city this weekend saw one small yearling spike Saturday evening and had six hunters pass under my stand by daylight saturday morning. as usual.

I use to carry mail in Oak Ridge. It is un-freaking believable the number of big bucks that start showing up in residential neighborhoods once quota hunts start out there. They know what's going on.

Food for thought. Oak Ridge gets hunted only 6 days a year. I am a bow hunter, so I always hunt the bow only zones. A person would think a bow hunted area would have good numbers and you would see a few deer from stand like you would on private property, but case in point you dont, especially in past few years. Yes I see and harvest a good buck every now and then but rarely see the numbers of all deer . I think something has happened. Surely they all dont swim the lake and leave after scout day. But then again they might, who knows.

You also need to add to this the scouting days which in my opinion is just as noisy and hectic, if not more so, than the hunting days.

Me and my dad hunted Oak Ridge last year on the late gun hunt. Didn't see a deer the first day. I was walking along a grassy trail that boardered a thicket and I saw a doe standing in the thicket about 100 yards off. I shot and knew I missed as soon as I pulled the trigger. While I was trying to reload my CVA, there were no less than 12 white tails that I could see bobbing through the thicket. They're there, they just know better than to move. I ended up seeing 16 deer in one afternoon.

What gets me even on scout days, I will walk miles over the place and not jump up one single deer. Go scout Lbl, Chuck Swan, Catoosa and I guarantee you will jump deer. Yes ,I agree they hold up in thick cover but still am convinced the numbers are just not there anymore and Ornl wants every single deer harvested that they can, and they will never put the point restriction back in place. so it is what it is.

Then the hunts must be accomplishing what ORNL wants them to.

Heck. I was in my stand an hour before daylight. Two jerks start walking up a deer trail that I had prepared for. I flash my flashlight at them. They don't stop, they walked right up to me, waved said they were heading to their stand. I was pissed. I had walked up on people, and turned and walked away out of respect, these two guys were just plain jerks. I about walked to the truck right after that. The pure disrespect is what gets me. What ever happened to "sportsmanship".

I hunted the very first hunt ever out there I believe it was 1985. I was 12 yrs old. My dad and I have put in for it every year since. So it is a special place for me and him to spend time there together and to get hunt. Every hunt I expect to get walked over by hunters and I usually do so I just expect the worse and hope for the best every time.

The deer numbers are definitely lower. Was it two or three years ago that ehd hit the area hard. Not to mention 2 deer with no antler restrictions. Personally I'd like to see a comprimose, a doe and a buck that is at least a 6pt. First two or three years I bowhunted Park City I saw no less than 10 deer a day. Last couple years I've seen 1 doe while on stand.

I agree it sucks for people to walk in on you ... But if you already had a stand hung that you were planning on hunting all day would you turn around and leave?

As someone who drives down 95 and Blair Rd everyday I say kill 'em all! Lol. I remember driving down Bear Creek at night and seeing herds of 20. I also remember a massive amount of road kill and tore up vehicles.

I spent 10 hours on Saturday and Sunday morning just off of Bear Creek Rd. across Haul Rd. where the powerline is and didn't see the first deer. The area looked real good with plenty of sign but not one deer!

I was just after the first guard shack on the left. Behind the power lines most of saturday. TONS of good sign, no deer. Heck there was a fresh scrape on the underground gasline area. Spent the last part of the day on the south east side of the area close to the river. Once again, no sign.

Amazing how daytime deer movement shuts down when the temperatures turn seasonably warm. I suspect the hot weather was most of the problem.

I understand . But how far away were their stands from you ? I don't like getting walked in on but if they told me they already had a stand hung in there I would understand . But if they were carrying stands in or just walking in on you for the heck of it I would get mad .... Maybe it's just me .
