Hunted Chuck Swan on Friday 12/7. Got to the gate at 5:00am and was about 15th in line. Gate was opened about 5:50. Hunted a stand of hardwood behind a thicket which was between a corn field and grass field. There was some decent trails, pawed-over leaves and a large scrape. Felt for sure that the thicket was home to a buck or two. Sat in my stand from dark to dark without coming down. About 5:00pm 4 does walked up a draw through some pines within 20 yards of my tree then into the thicket. They weren't in any hurry, but they didn't stop to feed for long either. They impressed me as being pretty small - probably yearlings, but maybe that's normal for the area. I pointed my rifle toward the draw, hoping a buck would be following after them, but none appeared. When I drove out, a whiteboard at the main checking station reported 13 deer were taken out of the 650 hunters drawn - that's a 2% success rate. Didn't return for day two. Guess I'll put in for Oak Ridge next year.

Oak ridge was not much better, but I don't think many people even showed up for the hunt. If I were a betting man, I would bet over half those drawn stayed home. Probably the same thing at chuck swan. Very few people over a very large area in less than stellar conditions equals very few deer killed.

You must have left awfully early. They did not kill a bunch, but they were upwards of 30 at lunch time when I was checking mine out.

Really. All I did was ask the guard on the way out. Any antlers?

Must be nice. All I saw was a deer running away from a yote.

I like to see the lack of interest in Chuck Swan. Make it easier for me to get drawn.
