After seeing and talking about summertime Rockfish in shallow water, I decided to take a break from deer hunting this morning to give it a whirl. I really wasn't optimistic but figured what the heck, the weather is warm and deer may not be moving as well today. Lo and behold after about 45 min of fishing and not seeing even a looker or chaser, I figured I was just as likely to see bigfoot as catch a rockfish in this shallow water river. Just then as I approach one of my honeyholes, out of nowhere comes a big rockfish and he attacks the gold redfin like he hasn't had something to eat in a month. Wow! I forgot how hard these beasts fight! After a lengthy fight with lots of drag pulled, I managed to get him in the net and in the boat. He weighed in at 23 lbs. I didn't measure him but he was less than 40 inches. I would guess 36 to 38 inches. I managed to land a smaller fish after this one that went about 15 pounds and had a couple of lookers. Then the rain started and I went ahead and packed it in. I only fished for about one and a half hours but it was encouraging to know that the redfins in shallow water will still catch a rockfish this time of year. Can't wait till we have another warm winter day!

Thats the funny thing, they were in the exact same place I catch them in the summer. The same type of water you fish. Shallow, cold clear river. Didn't think they would be there this time of year but they were.

That is awesome!! Guy at the sporting goods store told me they can be caught all winter. Seeing someone have some luck is very encouraging. Might get me into trouble with the wife tho! Now I'm gonna have to try em! Those are the most fun fish in our area!!

dbllunger, do you think some of the fish never leave or they leave and come back? Where I fish I can't buy one by September but I've heard people say there are some there year round even though I have never seen or caught one past September...

Catchdawg, I don't think they ever leave. At least some of them anyway. I have buddies that don't hunt that were catching them there a month ago. My friend that taught me said he thinks they are there year round as well. He just doesn't fish for them as he spends his winters in south florida and doesn't return till late april.

Mudbone, when I bought that boat last spring it already had the wood floor. It appears to be some type of softwood but Im not really sure. I just know I love it. It is very quiet and doesn't soak up the water and get heavy and the traction is great. It is put in place with wood screws to the struts?? that run across the bottom and up the sides as well. They put a lot of time and effort into doing it really well.

I'd like to give it a try but rockfishing is a pretty wet affair for me, my boat can't get where I catch them. I'll have to wait till May...
