Sorry to hear....please be extra careful with your loading procedure with your Savage( I'm assuming the use of smokeless).

What primer, powder, sabot and bullet combo were you using? What you described sounds like a bad fitting combo.I doubt that you failed to seat it fully...I have been shooting these smokeless guns since 2000 and the only time that I had a fail to fire was due to poor sabot/bullet fit.

Do you know which brand of sabot? What would you estimate your seating pressure to be? You can estimate this on a bathroom scale. When using H4198 you must absolutly have a tight fitting combo and you must ensure hard seating pressure.I would also suggest that you use the hottest primer you can find. The Fed 209A is the hottest followed by the CCI 209M.Personally I do not care for H4198 because of the experience you just had. It is not the first time. A outstanding substitute would be Vit N-120 from 57-60 grns or Reloader-7 63-65 grns.

i have used 2 lbs of h4198 shooting through mine never a misfire
i use the ole winchester 777 primers
i dont care what smokeless powder you use the bullet must be seated good with a tight sabot for it to ignite
Jon the 2 powders he suggested above are good powders i am a big fan of alliant powders
but i see no reason to change from h4198

Sounds like a loose fit to me too. I've only had one ever do that to me and I knew it was going to do it because of how easy the bullet went down the bore. Just like you described...pffffffttttttt and you can hear the bullet hit the ground about 40 yards away and powder in the leaves.
