Ok...I know it is not on everyone's mind, but dove field prep season is right around the corner \:D

OK...maybe not that close, but I am thinking about it for sure.

I have access to a piece of property that I can utilize for a dove field. A particular three to four acre spot, bordered by some pasture, woodlines, cutover on the neighboring property, nice pond with clean banks, some power lines on the road in...I will have access to a full size tractor and disk (bush hog of course as well) NO DRILL...I will have a little money to invest but not much...what are my options?

Not on this property, but in the past I have broadcast sunflowers and some millet with moderate success. Planting end of June/first of July, in the ground by July 4...also bare dirt with broadcast wheat (Foodplot)...

This doesn't have to be a Chaneylake field, but want it to draw enough and hold enough birds to hunt opening weekend, maybe one other weekend of the first split, then later season hunts when the migrators come thru...

Suggestions? LEGAL suggestions please?

Outdoor Life did an article a while back about small Dove fields:

By the way(not to impose) but if by chance you are looking for someone to help out financially(or physically) with the field I have been looking for a place to hunt close to home(Bartlett) for a while now. Keep me in mind.

Good luck.

Of the million i have killed over the years.. 2 types of fields stand out in my mind as having more dove than you could shoot... fresh harvested popcorn field.. or the "best" and easiest.. a disked up field with "winter" wheat sown.. I have tried the sunflower deal and had the whole field destroyed by deer..

Worth the trip just to watch Chaneylake shoot and Bunk work.
The droves of doves were a bonus.

google "sunflowers grown for dove hunting"

University of Arkansas has the article on their web site

I have ours planted by the 20th of April every year, the theory behind this is to have fields ready and drawing birds by August 1

the price of seed[hybrid], chemicals and fertilizer is going through the roof

I keep our fields so clean that we only bushhog about 10% of each field every year

many in my area go the cheep route every year and still wonder why they have very few or no birds, the main reason to this is that they planted to late and cut some necessary corners

there are probably 200 birds in my front yard field at I type this, I cant wait till the 19th

Ray,

That is an awesome offer! Thank you!

Unfortunately, I have work that requires my presence at that time. I will give you a call in the next few days to discuss though.

Thanks again for the offer! Maybe I could make it on another day.
