If you want to be more exact, definitely mark the rack (that is how the official B&C guys/gals do it) and use a loose tape or a loose/limp string and then measure the string on a ruler.

I did something similar minus the mark on the rack. I was using a piece of bailing twine and then measuring it on a tape. What i found most difficult about that was holding it along the beam as I went around while keeping it taut.

However, I was doing it more for fun. I didn't care what he scored. He was big enough. My personal best. And the first 9 pointer I have ever killed.

I have only seen 1 deer scored by an Official B&C scorer, he stated that the official scorer "must" use a steel tape, going on memory I am guessing one that is 1/4" wide

1/8th wide steel tape.

They also use a small steel cable, with a clip kinda like the one you seal up a bag of chips with for tine and main beam length. Its my understanding that you determine the top of the main beam, going cup to cup, mark it with a pencil, then measure the tine on the outside edge. The main beam is measured from the lowest point on the outside of the burr, and it runs center of the beam to the tip. Very interesting to watch.
