Slow for me as well... Had a 5 ptr come to me and bed at 8:30, grunted up a 4 ptr at 9. Got down at 11 when I ran out of all my food :).
Scouted/ stillhunted the block of woods right behind the TWRA checkin station...less buck sign there than anyplace I've seen, but I did manage to sneak up to within 20 yds of a 7ptr rubbing the heck outta some bushes....saw another 1.5 yo buck and a 2.5 yo buck. Been back on stand for 45 min or so for the eve hunt.
All the guys I've talked to who hunted in years past have been very disappointed. Not sure if it's the heat or last years flood (prob the flood), but they seem to think there's just a fraction of the deer that used to be here

How's the buck sign look? I'm curious after all the flooding that went on. When I was there 7 or 8 years back the huge rubs and scrapes were everywhere.

Most of the scrapes (I suppose I've seen 60 to 70) haven't been hit in the past couple days.... Have seen one or two that have doe prints in them from the past day or so. Fair number of rubs, I've seen more per acre o
n several other properties I've hunted

Insane amount of browse even in the woods. More greenbrier and honeysuckle than I've ever seen with no browsing pressure on it whatsoever

Yes, skeeters are terrible. That and the high temps are exactly why I gave up bowhunting when I moved to mississippi. I will give an endorsement for the thermacell, however. Bought my first one ever just for this trip. They were swarming me this morn an hour before daylight. A fow min after I flipped it on, they all left me in peace. There are more owls here than anyplace I've been on... Seen 6 or 7 so far. Maybe they've eaten all the deer

Lost my long-winded last post on the stupid blackberry... A quick synopsis... Saw a few little deer this eve; no deer killed on PI, a few shot and lost; one stud buck killed on ensley ( recurve shooter posteed pics) with 24.5" beams, 185lb field dressed and will prob scare 150".
TWRA has been great! Rumor has it that they will even drag your deer out of the woods for you ;). But seriously, I thank you guys for all the hard work you've done to make this hunt fun!

Missed a pretty good one early and then let a real bruiser get by me. Tried sounding like a frog but it didn't work. Saw four does and one smaller buck right around noon. Changed locations for the afternoon. Think I'll try and get 50-feet high and see if that works.
really your still on this

Slow morn so far, but I expect it to pick up with the line of storms blowing thru. Looks like the isle is gona miss the first round. Unfortunately, wind is now swirling with the line of storms...just had a decent sized buck coming to a grunt call upwind, but then the wind changed and he blew outta here. Never close enough to even tell if it was a shooter or not. I'm getting a bit ripe...last shower was 48h ago

I'm about 70 yds away from big muddy right now :). I'd have to walk across 250 yds of mud to reach the river it's so low!
Nothing else this am...heard a 4 wheeler come out about an hour ago...hopefully they got something.
Starting to question my gameplan... Half the hunters are stacked up on the NW corner of the island... I set up about 800yds to the east of them, hoping with all the pressure there it would push the deer eastward to me. I'm in a travel corridor with good bedding thickets all around, as well as a ton of food. Perfect spot for rutting bucks. But just haven't seen the number of deer I was expecting. Gonna move to another spot that has potential for the afternoon in about an hour or so

I know people who have swam across the river in the vicinity of Memphis, one even wrote a article about it.

Mainframe 10 with a bunch of trash just checked in...one of the highest scoring 3.5 yo's i've ever seen. Officers are out now looking for a 10 shot late this eve...good blood initially, then hunter lost the trail. Here's to hoping they find him!
My new spot was pretty good. Saw 13 does/ fawns feeding hard all after 4pm. 5 of them were literally right under my stand. May have to give that spot another try in the morn, hoping a good buck comes by with all the does in the vicinity.

Hmm...I didn't hear anything about an ethanol barge leak. That would have made big news I think. I work at the refinery (possibly where the barge would have been headed), and it seems like that would have come up. I did a quick Internet search and came up with nothing. Perhaps you might turn up more info and have better luck than me.

Sunday morn was a bust... had to wait to get into the stand till 6:45 due to a line of t'storms with lightening. I wanted to move 2-300 yds further into the woods from the night before, as my prev setup was more of an evening spot, but since it was already breaking dawn, I decided to just climb up the tree my stand was in.
I didn't see a deer, hunted till 10am, then had to get down to make it back home to spend a little time with the wife and kids before work this week.
Overall, it was a great disappointment after applying for 12 years. I've hunted properties with more deer, but the weather and lack of any significant rutting activity really put the nail in the coffin.
Also, I made a huge misjudgement in my hunting strategy... I was assuming that as soon as the majority of hunters piled onto the block of woods on the western end of the island, the mature bucks would not tolerate their presence and move outta there along the block of woods to the north. That just didn't happen... these deer, because of the lack of pressure, just don't relocate that far before being comfortable again. Plus, I think the overall population on the north end of the island is lower due to the lack of beans/ summer crops... the majority of deer seemed to be on the west and south ends of the island... that is where the 4 bucks were killed. (of course, that's also where 40 outta the 47 hunters were).
4 bucks killed on the island, no real big deer (160" plus) killed, I didn't hear of any reports of any really big deer even seen. I think all of the deer killed would score in the 130-150" range, save for a little 2.5 y/o 8ptr killed on Ensley.
Totals for the hunt... PI 4 bucks shot and recovered, 4 bucks shot and unrecovered Ensley 2 bucks shot, I am unaware of any unrecovered

Bummer. I am surprised that the hunters grouped up like that. 40 of the 47 focusing on one area? Is that where the sign seemed to be?

Lots of sign, but also, you gotta remember, the south and west timbered areas are about half of the total timber acreage... I think that the best pinch points are also located on those sides... having never been to the island before, I was just able to study the google maps, and could easily figure out what should theoretically be the best spots to cover for travelling/ rutting deer... of course, they are so obvious that I knew that everyone else could figure them out... which is why I wanted to cover the escape routes.
a couple guys camping next to me covered one of the pinch points... one of the bucks killed in the pic thread was from one of those guys... of course, they also did mention that they had two other hunters flashing headlights at them from thier trees 100 yards away as they were climbing up in the dark... so the pinch points did have folks stacked in them.
The block of woods just across the road from the check in station was completely ignored by all... I wanted badly to go in there and scout, but just didn't have enough time. I covered most of the rest of the island (except the far back west block next to the MS river) between the scouting day and still hunting/scouting midday on Fri and Sat.
Interestingly as well, I never heard any shots from the private land on the southeast portion of the island... I fully expected it to sound like WWIII from those guys once the WMA hunters got the deer stirred up.
