Yesterday it was my privilege to participate in a hunt that could only happen in the world of TNDeer.
In a nutshell, I ended up in contact with a member of our fine Social Network while looking for youth area equipment, which led to a discussion of hunting, which led to him making a recommendation that I check out a certain WMA. This led me to look up previous posts about this WMA, which led me to another member who lives in that area. I sent a PM to see if I could learn anything else about the property before driving out to see it myself. This led to an invitation to come along and hunt his family land, but since I had been planning to bring a local friend, I wasn't sure I could accept. He's welcome, too, I was told.
So Thursday morning Chad & I set out to a town we'd never been to before, to meet a fella we'd never met before, to hunt a place we'd never seen before, pursuing a quarry Chad had never killed before! Our host was LungBuster, who turned out to be a tremendously cool young man. I hauled a rifle, too, but stayed in the blind with Chad, who had a lot of questions about the hunt and wanted an advisor nearby. Maybe 7:30ish we hear a BOOM from over the hill behind us. Ten minutes later, another BOOM. Our eyes are peeled for action, as we overlook a steep wooded decline with a grassy strip below us about 75 yards out. The opposite hillside, several hundred yards away, is grassy pasture entertaining scattered beefs. Squirrels are wreaking havoc, both rutty and nutty, all around us.
By 9, with nothing seen but rodents and a trio of rogue horses, we're starting to lose a little steam. As I'm texting LungBuster to tell him we're gonna try to stick it out until 10, I spot the telltale brown slipping past below us. That led to THIS 2 minutes of excitement: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SwR_3LgF75A&feature=plcp
It was maddening to not be able to see the deer Chad was shooting at through the brush, therefore unable to tell if he was connecting or not. After I saw a dead limb blasted off the tree at round #3, I handed him my rifle, in case his glass was off. It was crazy; he'd shoot, we'd see a deer casually walking. He'd shoot again, the deer would walk the other way. He'd shoot, this time the deer had visible though small antlers. But not once did a deer look panicky or nervous!
Eventually we eased down the hill, watching for any sign of deer movement, and it was quite a revelation. What we took as a grassy bench was actually a steep decline that cut off our view of an even steeper decline into a hollow. We cast about for any sign of blood or hair, and just as I was trying to come up with some consolatory wisdom, Chad says, "Isn't that a dead deer down there?" Sure enough! Which led to THIS: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-ogOab4d-rQ&feature=plcp
The flashlight reference is for his youngest son, who offered his dad his own personal flashlight to help him on his hunt Best we can tell, the steep curve of the hillside hid a small group of deer, and he probably connected the very first time, but none of the others. And deer kept appearing like it was a shooting gallery, but they were different deer. In Chad's words, "I didn't think it would mess me up so much!", as he tried to keep his post-shot legs from shaking.
View from the Blind, and that far edge of the grassy strip is NOT the end of it. It just drops severely from there.

Proud as a first time daddy! Chad with his first deer.

Post surgery... we couldn't save the patient!

Finally, our gracious guide and host, without whom NONE of this would be possible. Thanks, LungBuster (who killed a great buck that morning), for an incredible day!

Sounds like a wonderful hunt. Love the last one with him holding the dead deer's heart!
Your breaking him in right.
Way to go Lungbuster!!!
