Anyone ever had old home movies transferred to a digital format? (DVD or whatever) We have a couple dozen 8mm tapes I would like to convert. All I can find is a couple of companies that want 15-20 dollars per tape for the service. ...seems pretty expensive.
Anyone else have experience with this?

Check out Wal-Mart as much as I hate to say it, they do it at some stores and online.

My parents had them transferred to VHS back in the day. Now they probably need to trasfer them to DVD. It wasn't cheap. My dad finally set up his vhs movie camera and played the 8mm movie on the wall and recorded it that way. He also played some music through my "boom box" while recording to help drown out the sound of the projector. This was all done probably 20 years ago.

Check on line or at a local camera shop/Radio Shack, etc. for a tape to DVD burner. My brother received one a few yrs ago for Christmas and it worked great, I want to say it was @ $100 bucks, if you have a boat load of tapes like we did, it pays for itself the first use. I will look and see if I can get the name and post a link on here

PS: You can do it through your TV or computer as well if you have a DVD player has burn capabilities, or download the software to your computer and transfer the film to the computer and burn a disc off the computer. You can google the procedures of transferring 8mm to DVD for details.

Kimber45, This is what I heard as well about the VHS tape, or any of the tapes. I will make it a priority to have this added as my Christmas wish, because I have quite a few loved ones that are not around anymore that are on these tapes, not to mention how the kids, and grandkids have grown.

I tell you we talked about it for years... After I made the move, I was SO glad I did and again there's a demand for the machines so you can pick up a nice used on Ebay, then resell when youre done.

If you have an 8mm player, you can do them yourself by connecting to a DVR/DVD recorder.
I bought one a few years ago for this very purpose as well as use it as a DVR without paying a monthly fee. Can also burn DVDs of ballgames etc from TV.

I have probably paid for the machine, not only in money saved by doing my own, but I have done several for coworkers charging $10 per full tape and then $4 for copies.
Doing some now for a coworker and making copies so she can give out as Christmas presents to family.

I've had my parent's 8mm reels for a few years now wanting to do the same. These were from when we were kids in the late 50's through the 60's.
Never trusted anyone to do it w/o damaging them.

Looked at it but its expensive. If you have more than a half dozen tapes you can buy a DVD recorder for the same price.

Yes, but they do this for a living and from my research since yesterday, they are extremely experienced.
I would never attempt this on my own, too many risks.
$19.98 per 50ft. of reel ain't bad to get it done right with very little risk if any.
$9.99 to do it and $9.99 to order a dvd of it.

For the old reel tape, I would agree. You would have no way of connecting one of those old projectors to a DVR anyway.
With anything else, if you can play it and get it to an audio/video output, the DVR is the way to go.
An added benefit, you can do some light editing with the DVR, such as deleting certain portions of tape you don't want, etc.

Yep, done that before transferring vhs to dvd. All mine now wanting done are 8mm reels from 50's and 60's.
