What was the reason you took it for diagnosis? Were you hearing a noise? What kind of noise?

If so, I'd seek a second opinion. Could be as simple as a serpentine belt tensioner, which is fairly common with those cars.

The reason people try to lump a water pump with a timing belt/chain is because they're already in there and there is an overlap for the labor when replacing the timing belt/chain, if it is indeed a t-belt/chain. If your water pump fails later down the road, it saves you labor to have replaced when replacing the t-belt.

Some shops will try to double dip and charge full pop for both repairs. The addition of a water pump in conjunction with a t-belt/chain should only be about half an hour labor (and parts) on that vehicle.

I doubt this problem has anything to do with a noticable vibration while driving, as that would, most likely, be something else.

If it is just the tensioner & is not out of time - can replace the tensioner itself in less than 30 minutes ( most of time is for removal of cam cover)

Computer won't diagnose a noise.

THis is what I recomend. If you have to replace waterpump, do the whole nine yards which includes timing belt, thermostat, belts, and antifreeze, add anything you can while at that point of repair. Because you will have to do it all over again very soon anyway.

On my 1967 Camaro it made a heck of a racket..eventually knocking a hole in the side of the timing chain cover!

I think you answered the question/comment already Coach. I was "assuming" since others mentioned a timing Belt that it did indeed have a Belt and not a Chain.. Belts react much different than a chain/tensioner setup. Chains are guaranteed to stretch forever so your tensioners take care of that, that is until theyve max'd out - at which point the chain comes off and the drive gear wods it up and pushes it thru whereever it decides to go \:\)

Since we now know it is a Chain setup, not a belt, its very likely the top tensioner Huntingdickson talked about and that is mentioned in the shortcut to a thread I posted several comments back \:\)
