The REAL problem with the state of the program is the local media
They all have an agenda and want to be the story.
The want to be the FIRST report the new hire. They also want to be the one that can say I told you so. If they would give a LITTLE support and a LOT less opinion the fan base MIGHT have feasible expectations.
Given the culture of the media/ fan base I don't blame coaches for thinking twice.
The media backed DD in a corner on his third year and he made a critical error in his DC hire. They also got on CPF and he made critical error on his OC hire.
There are ALOT of quality coaches that would come here and can win in a decent time frame BUT when every beat writer and local source reports falsely who has been offered/ declined the job ( if they know for sure or not) it drives the price up on what coaches think they can get to come here.
Don't count Hart out, I say he has a few cards left to play.
As far as Strong, if he wants to stay at at UL for same or a bit more money, I say it's because he doubts his coaching ability as compared to current SEC coaches.
He can stay at UL and make BCS games and move on to the ACC but that is not as quick a route to a NC as playing with the big boys.
I want someone that can coach, wants to be here and can look the SEC in the eye and say, here I come. Obviously Strong isn't ready or thinks he is unable to do so....

As a lifelong ND fan, I cant count the times I've heard someone say "the program just isnt what it once was" type crap. ND FINALLY found and hired the right guy, UT needs to do the same.
This UT program is rich in history and has put a slug of kids into the NFL. It has a passionate fan base and isnt the little brother of any other program in the state of TN. Its facilites absolutely rock and has some outstanding football alumni.
UT will rise to the top again IF they make the right choice for head coach.
Good points Andy, but then again, you are giving an unbiased observation. Some folks hate UT with every fiber of their being and apparently it consumes their every thought. I wouldn't expect anything but doom and gloom from them.

As a fan, I can tell you that the program is in worse shape than I thought. Unless we pull an Arky which I just don't see, Hart has screwed the pooch! I'm all for Petrino with a buyout clause. Proven winner and he knows this next job determines the rest of his career so he's not gonna screw this one up.

The local media in the know says Bobby Petrino will not be hired by UT..... So far ole Jimmy has been spot on....

I'm not impressed with what Bo Pelini or Al Golden have done at premier, easy to recruit to schools.
Butch Jones would be a better hire, although I'm certainly not sold on him.

I think UT is to the point that they will take Jones, That's if Jones will take the job..... Nothing a given at this point.
