Glad you found his rack, if nothing more. How far was he from where you last tracked him to? I realize the coyotes could have moved him some, but just wondering if he was close to where you last looked, or a long ways off in a different direction from where you looked?

Be aware that to legally possess the rack you need to check it in.

would this still hold true if a person found a deer that someone else had shot

so if you are in the woods and you stumble onto a deer skull and keep it, you have to check it? or does it just apply to deer that were obviously killed by a hunter?

It applies to a freshly killed animal and not a bleached skull.

And, before the question, the "freshly killed" part will be a discretionary call on the part of the officer, so there is not a ticking clock from illegal to legal.

I found a dead 10pt 2 years ago with no apparent cause of death way back in the woods,it was fresh, less than a day i'd say.And I cut the head off,and thought i'd do the right thing, and call it in,like the guide says...county WO said he needed it so he could have it tested for EHD.Well it tested positive for EHD,but he said i'd never get the head back.

Killing deer from the road is illegal \:\)

I think you can pick up roadkill as song as you report it within 48hrs of collecting. I asked scn last year.. pretty sure that is what he told me anyways.

Deer killed by vehicles have to be reported to TWRA or a law enforcement agency within 48 hours. They would be legal to possess.

It would be illegal to report a shot deer such as this as road kill.

yeah, but what about your buddy? He have a pain, too? Two people quit hunting because one has to pinch off a loaf? can't figure it and can get hundreds of examples of bucks being killed doing just that. Just have to watch where you drag them.

Must not have been much of a pain if you had time to stop and cut that stinky thing off.

To start, it isn't just rifle season. It is G/M/A season.

All three are open, so, yes, you can use a bow with a bow license. A gun license is not required unless using a centerfire weapon or shotgun with slugs.

Maybe a Stupid Question But I will ask it anyway, SCN writes you need to check it in to posses Any Parts. What about Shed Hunting Later in the year? Being new to the state I am not sure of all the laws. Is it legal to shed Hunt?

Sheds are legal.

Always check with public land managers if you want to look public grounds though. Some public hunting areas do not allow you to collect the antlers.

It use to bother me when folks could not understand when i was joking. It doesn't any more, I just chalk it up to being raised drinking bad water.

There was nothing negative about any of my posts. They were dang jokes about two grown men leaving the woods because one of them has to take a crap. Then. they stop along the way to cut the head off a ortting buck. When I have to crap, I don't have time to hardly get my pants off, let alone walk somewhere and stop to cut a deer's head off. Maybe I just see humor in more places that others.

See, many years ago I wrote a full magazine feature on what spooks deer. In that feature, I mentioned the several times I have killed and heard about deer being killed while performing that exact act. I have never understood how a deer can tell what the smell is. But you do have to watch where you walk.

In other words, get a life.

I missed a doe while archery hunting at LBL a few years ago - shot at her while my pants were still around my ankles! I missed, but then I had to look around to make sure no one had seen me. I think I was more concerned about stepping in a mess rather than concentrating on the shot. Pretty sure I heard her laughing over the next ridge...

Well said Stik. One of life's ost satisfying things a really good, deer woods crap. That is why so many hunters have only one sleeve on their undershirts.

And...there is no way you are going to mess up the woods. Oh, wait...that may be a play on words. Good one...mess up the woods. Goes with, if it is brown, it is down. Maybe sometimes slightly yellow.

Doe I killed three weeks ago, the big one, was just about five yards from a steamer. That way, she couldn't smell me. Thisun was lessen 10-yards from a recent evacuation. Buddyhelped me drag him out. Conversation went: Me, "Watch out, don't step in that...Oh well."

Him, " @#$%^&*(ksp;ljkwr67890 Blaaaak."
