The last three times Ive pulled the cards from my camera I have not gotten a single buck with an intact rack. Several young bucks with broken tines, but most are missing entire sides. Ive gotten about 4 different bucks missing a whole side, and one missing both sides completely. I have never seen so many busted up deer. Whats the deal????

Probably just the odds. Every so often, I will see exactly what you are descibing, but it does happen every year.

Although, the contiously improving buck age structure and sex ratio of parts of TN will increase fighting among bucks over time.

You should see the carnage on some of the South TX tropy ranches their extreme sex ratios and buck age structures produce. It isn't busted racks; it buck mortality from fighting.

Antkler shed timing is closely link to individual animal health. Healthy bucks will hold their antlers until the growth of the new set in springs pops the old set off from underneath. However, unhealthy or very rut stressed bucks can shed antlers just weeks after the rut is over.

I once worked with a deer herd in GA that was extremely unhealthy (over-populated). With peak breeding the first week of November, many bucks were dropping their antlers in mid-December. However, once we had greatly improved the health of that herd, the same bucks would carry antlers until late March or early April.

I was talking with Jim Evans at Oak Ridge and he is noticing the same thing. A lot of deer with broken racks this year.

We found a fresh shed laying on a range road at Fort Campbell one year. The date was Dec. 31st. Of course we left it laying.....against the rules to pick up sheds there.

More broken racks this year than I can recall seeing before but no explanation for it.

First buck I killed this year had one side broken off. He was a fat necked old buck and still had managed to break his rack and get scars on his neck. When I was hunting Williamsport last weekend a guy checked in a yearling buck with only one antler.

About half the bucks I see yearly have broken racks or missing tines. It's saved several of them in the past.

Last year a high fenced operation in Wisconsin (only has bucks inside the fence) had a hot doe enter under the fence in a low spot. 50 bucks died fighting over that 1 doe. The owner lost a heap of money but with tha kind of outfit I'm sure he was insured.

An injured or sick buck will shed a rack at any time. Also nutrition plays a factor. In poor years, bucks tend to shed earlier. Our food here has been great and to date, I have not seen any bucks with shed racks, just broken ones.

Alos, not unusual for the three places I hunt, but still, not the first scrape and only three early rubs.
