He won't score much, but I've been after him for 2 months. I'm guessing he's 4 1/2 or older. I love outsmarting an old deer. Just wish I got it on video!

It still amazes how much mass velvet adds to antlers and how small bucks look in the summer. Then late summer early fall the velvet comes off and the mass is packed on to the body. If there were no antlers on a summer buck like the buck in this picture i would say that's a good size doe.

Congratulations! \:\)
And ANY mature buck is an outstanding trophy!

Can't say how mature that buck is based on those pics, but feel confident he's 3 1/2 or older.

A growing trend I'm seeing in my primary hunting area (Stewart Co., TN) is that many of the fully mature bucks are not scoring as high as many of of the harvested 2 1/2 and 3 1/2-yr-old bucks. It appears a majority of those bucks surviving to maturity are those bucks with smaller than average antlers, and most hunters had no desire to shoot them as 2 1/2 & 3 1/2-yr-old bucks. By contrast, those top-end larger antlered 2 1/2's are seldom surviving to 3 1/2. A very disappointing "trend" for those of us who enjoy seeing really large antlers on mature bucks.

For those of you who are members of QDMA, a prime example of what I'm referring to is the recent story in Quality Whitetails about the "Cow" buck. This buck survived season after season in an area of what sounded like moderately high hunting pressure, his survival thought to be mainly because he had small antlers. He was killed in 2011 (North Georgia) and aged at 15 1/2 years old by Matson's Lab.
