Story to follow... 8 for the Plink.
I hunted a huge (15 acre) thicket this morning. I had a light rain most of the time. Stood against two different cedar trees and never saw a thing.
About 10 AM, I decided to walk out to a large wood lot and see if anything might be moving there. Half way to the woods, I look out into a green pasture field and see this solo buck standing in the field. He is at about 220 yards. Then, he starts walking toward the thicket I had just vacated. Looking through my binoculars, I instantly knew that, given the chance, I would shoot this buck.
I do not have permission to hunt this field, so when the buck walked behind a small rise, I took off running back to the thicket. I set up on the edge of the fenceline and waited for Mr. Buck to arrive. After 3-4 minutes, I see him, but he had changed course and was going to cross the fence about 15 yards from me. For me, it is very different having a buck that close with a gun in my hands. Talk about exciting!!! As soon as he crossed the fence, I found chest in the scope and thunder clapped. Mr. Buck did the ol' "drunk stagger run" for about 35 yards and accepted my invitation to go home with me for dinner.
Rough scores at 106" gross. Only 1" of deductions (not that I care at all). He is a VERY symmetrical.
155.4 pounds on the hoof. 121.4 pounds field dressed. I plan to make a Euro Mount of this buck.
Taken with 30-06, double lung and top of heart (I was trying for a shoulder shot). Good day in the East Tennessee deer woods.
