We have a 2.5 and a 3.5 that score in the 130's, another 3.5 and a 5.5 that might score in the high 80's to low 90's. Lots of factors involved in antler growth. My son killed a 2.5/3.5 (depending on who aged it) that had 1 inch nubs and a 2.5 4 point that had one side that was barely 3 inches and the other side was less that 3.

I'm not the TWRA, but from all my trail-camera data:
Big agriculture and/or river bottomlands, 115-120.
Ridge-and-hollow hardwoods, 105-110.
From your data what do 4 1/2 bucks average?
For all bucks 4 1/2+:
Big-ag/riverbottoms: 130-135
Ridge-and-hollow hardwoods: 120-125

An important thing to keep in mind on this question is exactly what AVERAGE means. Unless asked a different way, it does not mean what is the average of the top end 3.5 year old bucks in TN.
Average equates to the full, bell-shaped curve which includes the 70" deer as well as the 150".
I'd bet that 135 would be close to what the average is for the top 20% of 3.5 year old deer killed in TN. But, I think BSK's figures are very accurate on the AVERAGE of all 3.5 year old deer.

I would say 115 to 120 in my area, but I have taken 2 3.5 year olds that both scored 148.

In every single large data set study I've seen where scores of bucks by age are collected--and this is true in every area of the country I've seen these studies done--for each age-class 2 1/2 and older, the range of scores measured for each age-class exceeds 100 gross inches. In essence, there are 3 1/2 year-old bucks running around with gross 40" racks and 3 1/2 year-old bucks out there with 150+" racks. When enough bucks of each age-class are scored, every age-class from 2 1/2 and older shows this 100+ inch range from smallest to largest. The average is just somewhere near the middle.
Another fact that is hard for some hunters to believe is that in just about every one of these studies, the largest antlered yearling buck measured had larger antlers than the smallest antlered 5 1/2 year-old buck. What I'm getting at is this extremely wide range of scores in each age-class causes massive overlap between all of the age-classes. The "top-end" of the youngest age-classes are bigger antlered than than the "bottom-end" of the oldest age-classes.
That's why antlers can't be used to judge age. An 80" buck can literally be any age from yearling to 6 1/2+.

I know the mass can vary among bucks but generally speaking, the bases will get thicker with age, right? if I see a buck with very thick bases and I can't decide if he's 3.5 or 4.5 by the body, it's more likely he is 4 because of the mass or is it just too unreliable to guess?
Mass usually gets thicker with age, but only on average. I've seen amazingly massive 2 1/2 year-olds and thin-beamed 5 1/2 year-olds.
Look at an individual buck, you cannot assess his age by his mass.

Thanks. Based on that expected growth between 3.5 and 4.5 is 15 inches. That sounds about right.

Guy I hunt with shot a 7" spike. Thick bases with lots of gnarly bumps and a 2" kicker. Weighed close to 200lbs on the hoof. Fat floppy brisket, thick neck, and butt like Rosie Odonnell. Im guessing it was 4.5+ easy. Biggest deer shot in camp last year.
Crazy big buck with a tiny rack.
