I dont expect much feedback but figured i would ask.
I am going to Arkansas next week to hunt deer with dogs. This will be my second hunt and I took my .270 last time and this time I will be taking the ole mossburg 500. Any input on 00Buckshot?

3" OO is what I killed my first deer with. 40 yd shot put him down immediately. If I remember correctly on a 3" it has 15 pellets in it. I found 10 of my pellets when I butchered the deer.

00 and 000 are absolutely lethal within their effective range; just try not to be tempted by a marginal shot opportunity and think "pattern" vs. "a single point." On a shot coming at you, aim just below the white throat patch. Broadside shots; try to center the pattern just forward of the shoulder as opposed to behind like you might with a rifle.

As a kid in MS we ran dogs...good memories.

My exact thought. And enjoy yourself. I miss dog hunting back home in South Bama.

Growing up we dog hunted with rifles. We were spread out more so than some dog clubs were.

Pickens Co, AL was buckshot only but the drives were more organized but we also had a lot more hunters. I was impressed how deadly that stuff was. Rarely and I mean rarely did you hear a shot and a dead deer not be at the other end. Rarely. I was impressed. Those guys knew their guns and how to shoot that stuff.

I would recommend shooting both through your gun and see what shoots better. My old rem 870 express couldnt shoot 000 worth a darn. 00 buckshot was lethal though out to about 40 yards. I also use to use the copper coated loads and liked them.

I've killed quite a few deer with buckshot and the best size to shoot is whatever your gun likes. I would at the very least pattern some 00 and #1 buckshot with a couple of different chokes (sometimes the smaller sizes like tighter chokes and vice versa). A load that many people over look is #4 buckshot. In a 3" shell, I believe it contains 41 pellets. I used to use that load in a browning pump and anything inside 40 yards looked like a collander after you shoot it.

3" mag OO is what I killed my 1st deer with in La.There are not many critters that can take a load of 00 at 40 yards and remain standing.Dogs, swamps, and drives sure brings back memories.

I hunted in VA but never had the chance to hunt with dogs. I also never had a chance to shoot buck shot at a deer, but i know like someone else mentioned you have to lead them in front of the shoulder.

It is deadly when applied correctly ;\)
