I am leaning towards doing this but I would like to hear pros and cons from some of the smokeless users on here. Would also like to hear pros/cons of .45 cal vs .50 if any...thanks

I like my H&R Ultra. You'll end up having as much in it as you would a new Savage but it will be stainless rather than blued.

The 50 cal. boys have an advantage over us .45 guys when it comes to bullet selection. Pretty much use XTPs for initial sight in then swap to 200 gr. SSTs. Never could get the Barnes 195s to group in my gun. Some people's barrels are tighter than others but they all seem to be on the large side of the tolerance specs.

This is my 8th season shooting a Savage. Recently I aquired a H&R 45-70 from a co-worker who hunted with it during the Mississippi primitive weapons season. I've toyed with the idea of having it converted to a smokeless but I'm unsure about the 45 smokeless due to bullet and sabot selection. Which makes me wonder about a smokeless build using a H&R barrel in 500 S&W. Thoughts?

The 500 S&W has been tried but it was found to be too tight of a bore to use common bullets and sabot combo's. If you wanted to shoot sabotless then you could use a full form sizing die and use a 500 S&W but it won't be cheap.

Most of the .45-70 barrels are a bit loose, did you try Knurling them up any?

I played with knurling them but ran out of time before the season started. They started out at .399 and I knurled some up to .400 and .401 and .402. Didn't really tighten groups up any but that was also before I started using a cooling rod between shots. I'll play with them more in the off season. I'm going to a 3-9x50 Minox scope so I'll work on the load then.

Both deer I killed with it this year were pass throughs with the 200 gr. SST's. Both shoulder shots as well. 1 @ 135yrds. and the other @ 22yrds. Bang-flops on both.

Well really they were more like BANG-flops \:\)
