Never seen one before, but a guy told me he had a Mod 742 for sale, and when I looked at it, it was a Mod 740. Anyone know anything about this model. It's in 30-06 btw. Nice looking gun too.

Check bolt rail inside of the reciever to see if they have burrs and are rough, some uneveness is ok. Look at the locking lugs for burrs and galling. Lock the action back and look inside the chamber with a small flashlight to see if it is rusty. if all that looks ok, try loading several rounds to see if the action will go to battery. If so you should be Ok with it, if that action is rough I would say no go. These rifles need to be cleaned after every firing seasion, bolt needs good quality lubricant for it to cycle properly.

740 preceeded the 742. With regards to whether it looks good 7mminatree is exactly right.

Thanks guys. I've owned a few 742's, but never a 740. Just wanted to know a little about it. ;\)

Always heard not to lube an automatic. It gathers crud that jams it up worse. I use spray cleaner and make sure the action is totally and completely dry.

hope it's good. I had a 7400 that would jam like crazy. sent it back to the factory 3 times with broke extractor. finally traded it for a 700.
