I know its not feasible in most areas to allow deer to get that old, but what are your experiences with this age class of deer?

Much depends on the part of the country you are talking about, but in the Midsouth, I would strongly disagree with that theory. Of the 6 1/2+ year-old bucks I've been able to monitor with trail-cams, very few of them were ever photographed during daylight at ANY time of year. In addition, very, very few 6 1/2+ year-old bucks show up in the harvest data. These bucks are extremely difficult to kill.

You wrote: "I know its not feasible in most areas to allow deer to get that old..." Actually, they exist in more areas than you would think. They just never get killed.

First, a buck scoring 175 anywhere in the country, even at 6 1/2, is exceedingly rare. Second, I think you just found a very unusual old buck, and that's why he got killed.

[/quote] Don't you think that with food plots & an increasing number of hunters who pass deer until they get older, that the number of deer scoring 170 or better would be on the increase?

True 170+ inch deer are rare anywhere in the Country, but I do agree that hunter mindset and all that is being done to improve habitat and nutrition along with age, the size of deer being killed is increasing some, atleast on average.

Sure, there will be "more" 170+ bucks if more mature bucks exist, but at what tiny percentage doe "more" become relevant? I have hundreds and hundreds of trail-camera pictures of mature bucks in TN, and of those hundreds, I would have to say just a couple would break the 170 mark. So if I had to throw out a wild-[censored] guess, I would say less than 0.5% of mature bucks in TN gross over 170. So doubling the number of matures bucks increases the number of mature bucks scoring 170+, but they still make up a tiny percentage of all mature bucks. What I'm getting at is doubling the number of mature bucks doubles the number of 170+ bucks, but in reality you are still talking about bucks that are less than 1 out of a thousand bucks in the population (mature bucks usually make up around 10% of a well-managed buck population).
