it looks like I will be getting a 25/06 and wondering if i should pay the exta $100 on the "Long Rang Hunter"? It has an extra 4 inches worth of tube, and a check piece. Well closer to $200. Everything else they offer has a 22" barrel.

Depends on what bullets you are going to shoot out of it and the twist of the barrel. Is this a factory rifle or a custom?

the 25-06 really needs a 26 inch barrel or you may as well get a 243 ,

I have had two, one with a 24" barrel and now one with a 22" barrel. there is about 90 fps difference in the two and both shoot great.I wouldn't worry about it unless you want as much speed as you can get...

Remke, the 22" barrel savage will still do 3,000 fps or better with a 120 grn bullet if you handload. this is chronographed speed of course..if you were closer i would let you shoot it and decide for yourself, it is a very accurate gun....

Im sure the 22" will be "FINE". I mean, why would a company stiving to be known for making accurate weapons, put out a product that wont do just that?? I know the most of the time, the longer the better. I was just wondering what yal thought. Headed to the gunshow tomorrow, so ya never know. I might just run into something I can make a trade on. Im taking the 300 RUM to sell or trade.

I am sure a 22 inch 25-06 is accurate,,but IMO the 25-06 is at its best running 100 gr bullets at 3400 fps++,,a 120 at 3000 has no advantage over a 270 and the 100 from a short barrel is just maybe 50 fps better than a 243,, I have shot over 5000 rounds and probably closer to 10,000 rounds of 25-06 as it was the only gun I owned from `78 through `89 and I still shoot them,, across a chronie with a 22" you will be hard pressed to match the speeds the manuals list with a 24 inch,,with a 26 some loads are 200 and 250 fps faster than book data with 24 inch test barrels,, if you just want a deer rifle you might not notice the difference,,but to get the performance the 25-06 is legendary for I will take a 26"

Interesting as a 25/06 will be next rifle. I'll keep that 26 inche barrel in mind.

Mr big, i agree with what you are saying about the speed and longer barrel. i was just saying a shorter barrel will be just fine for hunting..where we hunt a 100yrd shot is seldom but once in a while a 300 yard is possible and the shorter barrel is more than enough at that distance...

agreed on that for sure,,the 25-06 is a very versatile cartridge,,it will do what you are asking with bells on,,to me though when I think of the 25-06 I think of being able to hold on hair out to 400

just very little,,I had a Mark V here for a couple weeks and maybe shot it 50 times,,it clocked a little over 3600 and would extend the max point blank range maybe 30-40 yards over the 25-06
