I understand this is a very diverse state mountains on one end Mississippi river bottom on the other end. But I happen to live and hunt in southeast madison county. In my neck of the woods there are many small properties 40 acres or less with an unbelievable amount of hunting pressure. Every tract could have as many as 3 or 4 people hunting on any give day. I stopped counting gun shots opening day when I got to 70. Our deer herd is beginning to dwindle . I have one deer hunting neighbor that has killed 12 or 13 does and 2 bucks already that is ridiculous. I understand at one time we had to many does but 2 or 3 more years of 3 does a day in my neck of the woods in my opinion is going to be more than the deer herd can handle.

I have seen his mug a time or two. The neighbor in particular that I was speaking of has killed all those deer just to watch them fall puts them in his truck and donates them to the hunters for the hungry never even gets his hands bloody. And he is not the only one around here with the more is better mindset. I strongly believe that the hunters for the hungry is a great program but in my particular situation we are quickly losing a great resource. I am only speaking of 2 or 3 square miles around my house. The western end of madison county is made up of mostly larger tracts of land and they are still seeing plenty of deer.

While distasteful, I don't think a few of these loose screws are really damaging the population, do you? When you are driving, there seem to be deer everywhere and early in the mornngs you see small groups of them in peoples front yards.

I believe that if you are in a unit L county, the goal is to reduce the herd. Your post indicates the regs are working. The issue is not whether the herd is shrinking, but what is the proper size/density of the herd in your county. Three does a day is only a problem if your county is below the target density and the herd is shrinking.
So, what is the herd density county-wide, and is that above or below the target density?

Reducing the heard overall is the goal and I think the 3 per day limit is a good way to go about that. However, there is no doubt that if one or two people "abuses" the limit (for lack of a better term) by killing all he can it can have a negative impact on a small area.
If you're eating the deer, then kill all you can eat and all your family can eat and more power to you. Or if your a farmer and you just really hate deer because they eat your crops, then I guess kill all you want as long as it's your property and it's legal. But if your killing 25 deer per year just to see them die -- your a tool.
